Although there are endless outerwear options for fall, these classic fall jackets are the most versatile styles that you can wear year after year, and they’re perfect for transitioning your wardrobe during the in-between season. Plus they feature a variety of lengths, materials and colors to ensure that you have the perfect coat for every occasion. You can layer these pieces over almost any outfit to stay warm and finalize your fall ensemble.

My outerwear collection has steadily grown over the past few years as I’ve carefully built my classic wardrobe. As I’ve added more pieces to my closet, I’ve discovered how much a quality, timeless jacket or coat can upgrade your style. Since outerwear is such a large piece, it’s one clothing item that I prefer to invest in for my wardrobe. It can be expensive when opting for a higher quality jacket or coat, which are clearly much pricer than most other clothing pieces. Even simple styles at more affordable stores like H&M and Zara can cost you over $150.
My philosophy is to invest in one quality piece each season. Start with the most versatile option like a wool or trench coat, then consider adding a leather jacket, blazers and shorter jackets. Although budget-friendly outerwear can still be quite costly, there are always affordable options that can last you several seasons. Purchasing second-hand, shopping sales, and researching a specific piece before you buy it are my go-to ways to invest in quality outerwear without breaking the bank.
How to Choose the Best Fall Outerwear for You
If you’re not sure which jacket or coat to choose for this fall season, here are some ideas to help you decide.
If you live in a warmer climate, opt for a trench coat, blazer or shacket in denim or cotton. Avoid heavy fabrics like wool and lined outerwear, or choose jackets in short or cropped styles.
If you live in a cooler climate, try a wool coat, blazer or shacket in wool. Choose lined pieces with heavier fabrics to keep your warm. Opt for long styles, and consider layering with a shacket for extra warmth.

I get the most wear out of my black wool wrap coat, but wool coats in timeless fall colors like camel, gray, moss brown, eggplant and khaki are also stylish options. If you are going to invest in just one jacket or coat this season, I’d recommend choosing a wool coat.

Although I already own a plaid blazer, I’m hoping to add this one to my closet this season.

A classic black blazer is another option that can be worn with almost anything in your closet. If you’re looking for a blazer to wear from fall to winter, a wool one will provide extra warmth when the weather gets cooler.

I’m often wearing mine with a cotton turtleneck tee, black straight leg jeans and chunky ankle boots for an edgier autumn ensemble that still feels classic. While plaid shackets were very trendy last season, I’m opting for more versatile styles in solid colors this year.

Layer it over a long-sleeve shirt on a warmer day or a thick knit sweater and a thermal undergarment when it’s colder outside. Try a belted trench if you want to accentuate your figure. You can find trench coats in a variety of lengths and colors, but I prefer a timeless long trench coat in beige.
