Paris is a city best explored on foot, which is why comfortable walking shoes are one of the most important items to pack. The last thing you want to deal with as you wander the city is blisters and sore feet.
After living in the French capital and visiting multiple times over the years, I’ve come to discover the best walking shoes for Paris. Not without plenty of trial and error though, and the sometimes inevitable trudge back to your hotel room in search of a more practical shoe (argh).
Sneakers are no doubt the best shoes for walking in Paris. I never visit the city without at least one trusty pair to get me through all of the shopping and sightseeing. Parisians, too, are fans of sneakers, especially sleeker styles that are as comfortable as they are cool.
Below, I rounded up my top picks for comfortable yet stylish walking shoes to wear in Paris. Sneakers, sandals and even flats: I’ve got you covered for every season with styles that I spot Parisians wearing in every arrondissement.
How to Pick What Shoes to Wear in Paris
1. Break Them in Before You Go
If you’re treating yourself to a new pair of shoes for your trip, don’t make the mistake of packing them straight into your suitcase. No matter how comfortable they might seem, Paris is not the place to break them in.
Be sure to give yourself time to test them out before you leave. If you don’t want to get them dirty outdoors, wear them around your house to make sure they’re truly walkable and keep them looking brand new.
2. Pack Neutral Colors
I always want to look effortless, yet chic in European cities like Paris. But since I like to pack light, I typically limit myself to three or four pairs of shoes per trip, which means each one has to work with almost anything in my travel wardrobe.
That’s why I typically stick to neutral colors. A classic pair of all-white leather sneakers, a beige flat for every day, and a sleek black heel for the evening—the simplest, chicest shoe wardrobe.
When it comes to the shoes Parisians wear, white sneakers are practically a cliché at this point. Recently, retro styles and trendy color-block designs have also gained popularity. If you’re craving color in your footwear, just make sure it complements the majority of your Paris outfits.
3. Invest in Insoles
I highly recommend bringing along cushioning insoles. They make a world of difference, especially for flats and sneakers without much support.
Although I could wear my Asics running shoes 24/7, they aren’t the most stylish walking shoe for Paris. On my most recent trip to Paris, I tried these Walk Longer comfort insoles (the name says it all) in my Vejas, and now, I don’t think I’ll ever travel without them. Even though my Campo sneakers are already super comfortable, these insoles made them feel even better.
For ballet flats, loafers and sandals, try these Love Your Flats & Sandals cushioning insoles that are perfect for low-heeled shoes.
4. Wear the Right Socks
They might not be the most glamorous item on your packing list, but the right socks can make all the difference in comfort.
You can think of your trip to Paris as a marathon with all the steps you’ll be clocking. I easily hit 20,000 steps a day, so wearing athletic socks with my sneakers helps prevent blisters and keep my feet dry.
If you’re after something a bit dressier, look for thicker materials that will cushion your feet and look polished with boots and loafers. And for ballet flats, these cushioned no-show socks are always in my suitcase.
5. Bring Blister Patches
Even with the best walking shoes, blisters can still happen. It’s better to be prepared than interrupting your plans to find the nearest French pharmacy. I like to carry blister patches and Band-Aids in my bag just in case.
6. Rotate Your Shoes
Once you've arrived in Paris, it helps to change your shoes throughout the day or alternate between different days. And not just pairs, but styles too. This will help relieve pressure on different points of your feet, plus allow your shoes to air out. I typically rotate between sneakers and flats during the day and ankle boots and heels at night.

The 10 Best Walking Shoes for Paris
1. Best Sneakers to Wear in Paris: Veja Campo Sneaker
After years of walking around Paris, I've found Veja to be the best sneaker brand. They’re incredibly popular among the French. Stroll around any part of Paris, and you’re sure to spot the iconic “V” logo worn by many chic women (and men too). The Campo and Esplar are the most classic styles.
I personally own the Campo sneaker, and if you’re new to Vejas, I would recommend these as your first pair. Many people find the Campos to be the most comfortable Veja style due to the slightly higher footbed and more support they provide. I’ve walked all over Paris in them, and they’ve become my favorite footwear for long days of exploring.
The Esplar looks almost identical but has a thinner sole. They feel a bit stiffer than the Campo. The leather isn’t as soft, but at the same time, I find that’s what makes them look a bit more dressy.

2. Best Shoes Parisians Wear: Veja V-10 Sneaker
Don’t settle on these two Veja styles either though: they have plenty of cool styles including the V-10 (for a sporty, vintage vibe), Volley (which looks like everyone’s favorite Adidas Sambas), and the Rio (on my current wishlist).
Veja sneakers are widely available in the U.S. at stores like Shopbop and Nordstrom, but if you're in Paris, you can find them at department stores like BHV and Galeries Lafayette. Just don’t plan to wear them right away without breaking them in.

3. Best Shoes for Walking On Cobblestones: New Balance 574 Sneaker
A cult classic for a reason, the New Balance 574 is another sneaker you’ll see throughout Paris (and not the ridiculously high heels à la Emily in Paris). It nails that sweet spot between sporty function and understated street style with a retro silhouette that doesn’t scream gym shoe.
The plush midsole cushioning and solid arch support are exactly what your feet need after a day of museum hopping or shopping in Le Marais. I also love that they give you a bit of lift, thanks to the ENCAP sole, without feeling too chunky.
Go for a neutral like beige, grey, or navy if you want a versatile, goes-with-everything pair or try one of their seasonal color drops for a fun twist.
You can even buy them on Amazon if you need a stylish last-minute pair before your trip.
4. Best Walking Shoes for Paris in Winter: New Balance 327 Sneaker
The New Balance 327 is one of the best sneakers for Paris if you’re after something sporty but still stylish. With its retro silhouette and lightweight design, it’s a favorite among both travelers and Parisians for long days on the go. Ask anyone who’s spent time in the city, and chances are they’ve seen multiple pairs.
If you’re serious about comfort, the New Balance 530 and 550 are chunkier and more performance-oriented, so they offer extra cushioning and support. Just keep in mind that these styles look very sporty. Personally, I find them harder to style with dressier outfits, but they work well with tailored trousers or full-length jeans, especially if you’re visiting Paris in the winter.
5. Best Stylish Walking Shoes for Paris: Adidas Handball Spezial Sneaker
Lately, I’ve seen a lot of French women wearing Adidas Sambas. This sneaker trend is everywhere in France. I never leave my apartment here in Strasbourg without spotting a pair. While I own a pair of Sambas myself, I personally don't find them to be the most comfortable shoes for walking in Paris.
If you want to look très à la mode without all-day pain, I’ve heard that the Adidas Handball Spezial is a much comfier alternative with the same retro look. It has much more support in the sole, including arch support, and has a more roomy toe box, which helps when you're walking all day.
If you’re set on wearing Sambas in Paris, just make sure to break them in before your trip, or opt for the Spezials to stay on-trend and blister-free.
6. Best White Walking Shoes: Adidas Stan Smith Sneaker
Another timeless tennis shoe that’s practically part of the Parisian uniform is the Adidas Stan Smith. Versatile, classic, and comfortable, you really can’t go wrong with an all-white leather sneaker for exploring the city—and it’s one of the best shoes for walking all day.
They’re easy to dress up or down, pair effortlessly with everything from a blouse and jeans to floaty dresses, and feel comfortable enough to keep up with 20,000-step days. Everything you want in a travel shoe.
While green and navy detailing are most common on the streets of Paris, I’ve been eyeing the yellow ones below for a summery pop of color.
7. Best Retro Walking Shoes for Paris: Nike LD-1000 Sneaker
You’ll also see Nike shoes in Paris, especially sleeker, retro styles. Chunkier performance styles, not as much.
My first choice is the Nike LD-1000 Sneaker. Originally designed for long-distance runners, this sneaker has made a strong comeback thanks to its slim profile, cushy comfort, and cool-girl appeal. It’s the kind of shoe that will bring just the right touch of nostalgia to all of your Paris summer outfits without sacrificing support. As a bonus, it comes in several colorways, but the blue and brown combo feels especially trendy for 2025.
8. Best Shoes for Walking All Day: Dr. Scholl’s Time Off Sneaker
While I’ve already mentioned Dr. Scholl’s inserts above, their shoes are just as impressive. If you’re after a classic white sneaker that’s actually designed for comfort, the Dr. Scholl’s Time Off Sneaker deserves a spot in your suitcase. I’ve seen these go viral on TikTok as some of the most stylish walking shoes for travel.
This pair features a slip-on design (perfect for getting through airport security), and the brand’s signature Insole Technology: antimicrobial, anti-odor, and anatomically cushioned for all-day comfort.
For the support of athletic shoes without the super sporty look, these ones are a cult favorite amongst frequent travelers.

9. Best Walking Shoes for Paris in Summer: Alohas Harper Leather Sandals
Walking in sandals around Paris is a bit of an art. Flat, flimsy styles and flip flops are a definite no if you’ll be on your feet for hours.
The Alohas Harper Leather Sandals are my top pick for the most comfortable walking sandals that doesn't sacrifice style. With bold buckle straps, molded footbeds, and a stacked midsole that gives you a subtle lift, these sandals check all the boxes. They also offer ample cushioning and a secure fit—exactly what you need for strolling on the cobblestone streets.
I like that they feel more polished than your classic Birkenstock Arizona Slide Sandal, another beloved walking sandal. Styling them is also easy. Pair them with a midi dress, linen mini, flowy jumpsuit, or tailored trousers. They even work for dinner when paired with a maxi dress or skirt.
10. Best Flats for Walking: Vivaia Margot Mary Jane Flat
When sneakers feel too sporty but heels are out of the question, ballet flats are my go-to. Timeless and très Parisienne, they’re a favorite among the chicest of locals. While they’re not built for high-mileage days, a thoughtfully chosen pair can still go the distance—style-wise and surprisingly, comfort-wise too.
For walking around Paris, choose a pair with cushioned insoles and a structured sole. A little arch support also goes a long way when you’re exploring the city. I learned this the hard way on my first trip to Paris, wearing a cheap pair from Zara that left my feet aching after an hour or two. Don’t make my mistake by going cheap with your footwear, even for such a lightweight shoe.

Your Repetto and Chanel ballet flats will certainly look stylish in Paris, but if you’re after something more supportive, the Vivaia Margot Mary Jane is the flat everyone’s talking about (celebrities included). Designed with an adjustable instep strap, this pair offers a customizable fit that hugs your foot in all the right places. They come in a ton of different colors that are perfect for clocking miles all over the city. They’re even dressy enough to wear for dinner. The best travel flats, hands down.
