Building your fall wardrobe doesn’t have to be expensive. Even though thick sweaters, leather boots, and long coats can cost you more than summer pieces, I’ve found several budget-friendly options that will keep you warm and chic this season. Sweaters are the first item I shop for when fall arrives. I like to have a good mix of neutral-colored sweaters, and when I’m shopping on a budget, I find that darker colors look the best. This dark gray turtleneck sweater is a great staple sweater that would pair nicely with almost anything. I also love this black sweater; wear it with straight-leg jeans and a pair of boots for an easy, casual look. Lightweight turtlenecks are another fall essential for me. I usually buy a few from Everlane each year, but I’m also planning to pick up this mock turtleneck sweater from H&M.

After stocking up on sweaters, I add some outwear to my fall wardrobe. A blazer is a the perfect piece for autumn as it never goes out of style. Try it in black or a neutral-colored plaid like this one. When the weather is cooler, it’s nice to have a thicker coat like this wool-blend one from Monki. A shirt jacket is another versatile piece of outwear that I’m wearing a lot this season. Check out my post on The Best Shackets to Wear This Fall for some of my favorite ones, including lots of affordable options.

Jeans are a year-round closet staple for me, but I’m wearing them the most during the fall. My go-to pair are these black, straight-leg jeans. A pair of classic woven pants are another great staple for you fall wardrobe. These gray ankle-length pants paired with some sneakers and a sweater would make for an effortless autumn outfit. You also cannot go wrong with a skirt. Try something classic like a plaid or houndstooth mini skirt, or go with a longer, flowy skirt.

Don’t forget about the basics when you’re shopping for fall. I always stock up on neutral-colored t-shirts that are great layering pieces. Arket and COS make some of my favorite tees that are relatively affordable. You can also purchase a long-sleeve version for extra warmth. A poplin shirt is another wardrobe essential that looks chic under sweaters and blazers during the fall season.

Shoes can seem like a big investment, but I’ve found several trendy pairs that are quite inexpensive. These tall black boots from Monki are only $60! Another great shoe for autumn is a pair of loafers. If you don’t want to splurge, then consider this gorgeous pair from Zara. You can also never go wrong with a classic pair of white sneakers. I’m constantly wearing my Veja sneakers up to the winter months.

A black, long-sleeve dress is the only dress that I have in my closet during the fall. It’s perfect for more formal occasions when paired with heels, but it can also be worn with chunky boots and a blazer for an everyday look.
