save or splurge wardrobe

Building a stylish and versatile wardrobe requires a strategic approach to shopping. While it's tempting to splurge on every trendy item that catches your eye, a balanced wardrobe involves a mix of both budget-friendly basics and investment pieces. Although more expensive items typically fit better and last longer, it isn’t always necessary to buy the highest quality in every category. In this post, I’m sharing which items you should save on and where it makes sense to splurge. Keep in mind that these are guidelines, and feel free to tailor these suggestions to suit your unique wardrobe preferences. Save vs. Splurge: When You Should Invest in Your Wardrobe

When to Save on Your Wardrobe

  1. Trendy pieces. Fashion trends come and go quickly. What's considered trendy today might be out of style tomorrow. Always save on items that might have a short-lived popularity. By saving on trendy items, you free up your budget to invest in high-quality staples and timeless pieces that form the foundation of your wardrobe. These staple items typically have a longer lifespan and contribute more to the versatility of your closet. I try to avoid spending on trendy pieces as much as possible. However, sometimes items that are trending are worth the splurge. Non-trend trends for 2024 like ballet flats and classic cardigans are popular right now. They’ll eventually become less popular, but they have a timeless appeal that makes them worth splurging on.

  2. Tees and tank tops. Basics like plain white tees and tank tops are the foundation of any wardrobe. Since these items are prone to wear and tear, it makes sense to save on them. Garments in light colors that can easily stain are particularly smart to buy at a lower price point. Look for affordable options that are well-made and can withstand regular use. For high-quality tees that won’t break the bank, Uniqlo is my favorite brand to shop. I repurchase their crewneck t-shirt at least once per year.

  3. Underwear. Underwear is not often visible but plays a crucial role in comfort. Save on everyday underwear by choosing reasonably priced, durable options. I shop Monoprix (the French equivalent of Target) for a lot of my affordable basics. The Italian lingerie brand Intimissimi is my go-to for lingerie and more delicate underwear.

  4. Socks. For me, basic socks for everyday use fall into the save category. You can find affordable options made from comfortable materials that hold up well with regular wear and washing. Save your budget for more statement-worthy accessories. Again, I shop Monoprix for most of my socks, but I’ve also found budget-friendly options at H&M and Gap.

  5. Tights. Save on basic tights and leggings for everyday wear. There are plenty of affordable options that provide comfort and versatility. I’ve tried both affordable and expensive tights, and while you can definitely appreciate the quality of a luxury pair, they seem to snag just as easily. Now I almost exclusively shop at Calzedonia and Amazon for affordable tights that look just as luxe as my expensive pairs.

  6. Athletic clothes. For everyday workout gear, it's better to save. Many affordable activewear brands are just as functional and stylish but won’t break the bank. Look for moisture-wicking fabrics and well-constructed pieces that are comfortable to exercise in. For budget-friendly athletic clothes, I’d recommend checking out Uniqlo. Their AIRism line, in particular, has several lightweight, breathable options that fit wonderfully. I also shop at Aritzia and Old Navy for more accessible activewear basics.

  7. Sunglasses. Fashionable sunglasses don't have to come with a designer price tag. Save on trendy styles by opting for affordable, well-made alternatives that still provide UV protection. You can shop more trendier shades on sites like Amazon, but for inexpensive classic styles, I’d recommend Quince. I’m constantly recommending these timeless wayfarers and these classic aviators.

When to Splurge on Your Wardrobe

  1. Outerwear. Investing in a durable coat or jacket for colder seasons is worth the splurge. Look for classic styles and quality materials to ensure longevity. You can get away with more affordable outerwear during the warmer months, but when it comes to freezing winter temperatures, a pricier wool coat is almost always worth the splurge. A classic leather jacket is another item that never goes out of style. Investing in a high-quality leather piece will usually fit you better and last for years.

  2. Knitwear. When it comes to luxurious materials like cashmere and high-quality wool, consider splurging. A well-crafted cashmere sweater or a finely woven wool cardigan is an investment that pays off in both comfort and longevity. These pieces not only feel exquisite but also stand the test of time, making them worthwhile additions to your wardrobe. I’ve invested in more expensive sweaters from Theory and Lisa Yang, and the quality is incredible. I also love my more affordable knits from COS and Uniqlo which lasted just as long.

  3. Silk. From everyday basics like camisoles or blouses to dressier pieces like slip skirts or dresses, splurging on silk is worth it. A high-quality silk dress or blouse can add a touch of luxury to your wardrobe. There are endless ways to style these pieces, making them a worthwhile investment. I’ve been recently loving Lily Silk and their range of gorgeous silk pieces. This glossy silk shirt is currently on my wish list. Everlane is another brand I shop for silk basics like blouses. For silk dresses, I’m constantly browsing Reformation for timeless, chic options.

  4. Denim. Whether to splurge or save on denim is a bit more subjective. Some people love their more affordable jeans from brands like Zara and & Other Stories, while others swear by high-quality denim. When it comes to jeans, it’s a much more personal decision than some of the other items on this list. For trendier denim, it’s always a good idea to save and look for mid-range brands that offer good quality without breaking the bank. White and cream jeans are classic pieces, but since I only wear them in the summer and they’re prone to staining, I opt for less-expensive pairs. However, I’d recommend splurging on at least one pair of premium denim jeans. They’re often made with superior materials and varying cuts and silhouettes that really flatter your body shape. Opt for a classic cut and wash for a timeless addition to your wardrobe that you’ll wear season after season.

  5. Leather bags. While saving on trendy bags and canvas totes is reasonable, consider splurging on a high-quality, versatile handbag that can withstand the test of time. A well-crafted leather or designer handbag will instantly elevate any outfit too. Even if you’re wearing an affordable outfit, a nice handbag can make it look more expensive. My favorite places to shop for long-lasting leather bags at Cuyana, A.P.C., and DeMellier.

  6. Everyday jewelry. When it comes to trendy, statement pieces, saving on costume jewelry is a smart move. However, I’d recommend spending a bit more on everyday jewelry that you’ll wear frequently. Not only will your jewelry look better, but it will last forever if you take care of it properly. I’ve dealt with tarnishing and discoloration that now I make it a priority to invest in fine jewelry that I know I’ll wear day-to-day. Check out brands like Mejuri, David Yurman and Jenny Bird for some beautiful jewelry staples.

  7. Shoes. For footwear, it's worth spending a bit more on comfortable shoes. A high-quality pair of boots, loafers, or heels can last for years and provide both style and comfort. As with all the items on this list, it’s important to consider the cost-per-wear when making purchasing decisions. You’ll get so much wear out of shoes that a more expensive pair is often a better investment. Even when your shoes appear to be reaching their limit, the option of resoling can also extend their lifespan. Some of my most-worn shoes are from Stuart Weitzman, Repetto, and Aeyde.

When to Rent

Renting items for your wardrobe is an excellent idea, especially when you need outfits for special occasions or events. If you don’t want to repeat the same outfits, consider using platforms like Rent the Runway and FashionPass. It's also beneficial if you want to experiment with designer pieces that might be beyond your regular budget.

Striking a balance between saving and splurging is the key to building a versatile wardrobe without compromising your budget. Keep in mind that splurge items don’t always have to drain your wallet or even be expensive. You can find quality pieces if you’re patient and know how to find them. Shopping at thrift stores and outlet sites is one of the best ways to find discounts on premium pieces. Most retailers offer seasonal sales which is another amazing opportunity to invest in quality items for less.
