Weather in Paris in April
Paris weather in April is best described as transitional. While the days generally have clear skies and pleasant temperatures, you can expect cooler mornings and the occasional rain shower.
It’s one of the rainiest months in Paris, so I’d highly suggest packing a compact umbrella for Paris. If the forecast calls for rain, also bring a pair of comfortable closed-toe shoes or waterproof ankle boots. I’d pass on rain boots though, as they can be uncomfortable for all the walking you’ll be doing in the city.
Temperatures typically range from 46°F (8°C) to 61°F (16°C), so it’s definitely that in-between weather, but rarely cold.
You’ll definitely want to pack a trench coat or lightweight jacket, cozy knitwear, and shoes that can handle damp streets will support your feet as you explore. A chic shawl or tailored jacket will come in handy for cooler evenings when you’re trying to decide what to wear to dinner in Paris.
Of course, always be sure to check the forecast for your exact travel dates and adjust your packing list accordingly!
As we approach summer, days get longer (yay!). In April, the sun rises around 7:00 AM and sets near 8:30 PM. This means you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy iconic Parisian cafés, blooming gardens and busy outdoor markets.
Overall, April in Paris is a bit chilly and transitional, but with the right travel wardrobe, you’ll be able to fully take in the French capital as it starts to come out of hibernation.

What to Wear in Paris in April
Outerwear
Trench coat. The ultimate Parisian staple, especially during the transitional season. A classic beige or camel trench is almost always in my suitcase for spring. Lightweight, weather-resistant, and ever-classic, it wears well over just about anything. If you want to style it like a local, check out my guide on how to wear a trench coat the French way.
Blazer. A tailored blazer adds structure and sophistication to even the simplest outfits. Pair it with jeans for a chic daytime look, or drape it over a dress or pants for a smart-casual evening vibe. Neutral tones like black, navy, or soft gray are easiest to mix into your capsule wardrobe.
Lightweight jacket. For more casual outings or unpredictable weather, a lightweight jacket is a must. It can be denim, cotton, leather or even suede (like I chose for this capsule). Something that adds style without bulk. Layer it over knits and tees, or even slip it under your trench coat!
What about wool? The cold of winter can sometimes carry into early spring. It’s not uncommon to still need a wool layer in March and even April. You won’t likely need a super-heavy winter coat, but a thin wool layer can sometimes make a difference. If forecasts look close to cold for your Paris trip, you might swap out the trench coat for a thinner wool coat instead.
Tops
Sweaters. Lightweight knits are a spring wardrobe essential in Paris. They’re perfect for layering over a button-up or under a trench when the mornings are chilly. Crewnecks, cardigans, and even short-sleeve styles are all in my spring rotation. You can also play with a palette of colors to make your neutral outfits stand out.
Button-up shirt. A crisp button-up can quickly refine any outfit. Wear it tucked into jeans for a classic Parisian vibe or layered under a knit or blazer when it’s cooler. White, soft blue, or subtle stripes are easy to mix into any capsule wardrobe.
Basic tees. Spring is when I get the most mileage out of my wardrobe basics! If you’re packing for Paris in April, a few simple tees (long- or short-sleeve) are a must. They’re perfect for layering under knits, blazers, or lightweight jackets. Trust me, you’ll be surprised how many outfits you can create with just a few basic tops.
Silky blouse. Perfect for shows, concerts, jazz bars, or dinner out, a dressier blouse amps up the elegance of any outfit. It’s optional, but something to consider based on your own Paris itinerary.
It’s easy to forget that it can still be quite chilly in April! So consider packing some lightweight thermal layers. The regular Uniqlo Heattech line is made for temperatures ranging from 23 °F to 59 °F (aka unpredictable spring weather!). The pieces are quite affordable too, and you can find Uniqlo stores all over Paris if you decide you need something up during your trip.
Bottoms
Classic blue jeans. For April in Paris, I’d pack one or two pairs of straight-leg or relaxed denim. The Reformation Cynthia Jeans are one of the most flattering straight-leg jeans that I’ve tested (and that you can wear year-round), but I’m just as obsessed with this wide-leg style that’s very on-trend.
White or ecru jeans. If you’re feeling adventurous, a pair of white or ecru jeans instantly feels fresh for spring. They’re still season-appropriate since it’s not quite warm enough for bare legs. Skinny, straight, wide-leg, or bootcut, I see Parisians wearing all silhouettes, so choose whatever feels best for you.
Tailored pants. For a smarter look, tailored pants are a must. Straight-leg is a forever classic, but wide-leg and bootcut styles are also trending right now. I’d suggest sticking to black or navy for easy maintenance on travel, or try lighter neutrals like camel, cream, or light gray for spring.
Midi skirt. If you want a skirt option, a midi is ideal for this time of year, keeping you covered when the temps are still cool. I’d opt for a silky slip style or a thicker knit option depending on the weather.
What about dresses? I didn’t include any in this capsule wardrobe, but they are still very much an option, as long as you plan for layers. Knit or long-sleeve minis and midis would be my first choices for April. If you’re checking the forecast and seeing lower temps, plan to style them with tights and boots. I would also bring along a cardigan to wear over sleeveless dresses.
Shoes
Sneakers. You’ll absolutely need a comfortable pair of walking shoes for Paris. A broken-in, stylish sneaker is essential for wandering cobblestone streets and clocking 20,000 steps everyday. Even if you think you won’t need them, you probably will. Slim styles from Adidas or New Balance are everywhere right now, but chunkier silhouettes are fine if you need the extra support. If I’m staying more than a week, I often bring two pairs to rotate between (that’s how much I wear mine!).
Loafers. The right balance of style and comfort, loafers can be dressed up with tailored trousers or kept casual with jeans. Again, only pack a pair that you actually feel comfortable walking in. Paris is not the best city to break in your new shoes.
Ballet flats. Another flat, spring-ready staple are ballerinas. They are super lightweight (aka easy to pack), but the downside is they don’t offer much support. I wear mine more for shorter outings (like grabbing a coffee or a museum visit), but not for an entire day of walking. If you’re tempted to treat yourself, stop by Repetto while you’re in Paris and pick up a pair!
Ankle boots. A low, thick heel makes ankle boots great for day-to-night dressing. Flatter Chelsea boots are another practical option that are popular in Paris. I didn’t include a pair in this capsule wardrobe, but they could easily replace the ballet flats or loafers. I wear mine all throughout spring.
With all the walking you’ll do (not to mention the uneven cobblestones) smart footwear is probably the most important part of your Paris packing list. For rainy days that are common in April, pack at least one pair that’s water-resistant. Not full-on rain boots, just something you don’t mind getting a little wet.
And if a dressier dinner is on your itinerary, you might bring a simple block heel or Mary Janes.
Accessories
Scarf. Visit Paris (or really anywhere in France), and you’ll see plenty of locals wearing scarves. It might sound cliché, but it’s true! A silky scarf is the perfect option for spring. Lately I’ve been seeing cashmere and wool bandanas everywhere too. April is still a transitional month, so you can absolutely get away with those slightly warmer fabrics.
Belt. Want a quick way to elevate any outfit? A belt! It takes up almost no room in your suitcase, yet it instantly pulls everything together (quite literally). Slim or wide, leather or suede, pick one that complements the rest of your Paris packing list.
Crossbody bag. One accessory that I include on all of my Paris packing guides is a crossbody bag. It’s just what you need for long sightseeing days to stay hands free for all of the pastries you’ll eat and photos you’ll snap.
Sunglasses. No matter the season, I always pack stylish sunglasses. As sunny days start to pop up in April, you’ll be happy to have a pair or two on hand. Some of my favorite sunnies are from the French brand, Jimmy Fairly.
One more note on bags: if you like a little extra space (I know I like to haul around my water bottle, souvenirs, etc.), a lightweight tote works well too. Just don’t overstuff if you’re out and about all day.
I will forever swear by the Longchamp Le Pliage (also an amazing Paris souvenir), but more recently I’ve been eyeing the leather totes from Le Tanneur. The small Louise bag is the style that I featured in this capsule wardrobe!
Along with your favorite everyday jewelry, I love a pair of statement pieces for evenings. A chunky bangle or oversized studs take up zero space and instantly make a statement. Hair accessories too! Lately I’m loving barrettes, clips, silk scarves, really anything to upgrade a basic bun or ponytail.

What to Pack for Paris in April
Now that we’ve covered what to wear in Paris this April, let’s talk about the little extras that you’ll be thankful you packed.
I almost always bring my travel steamer, especially in spring and summer when I wear more wrinkle-prone fabrics like cotton, silk and linen. Before packing one, check if your hotel or Airbnb provides an iron.
A compact umbrella is another must-have for any unexpected spring showers that pop up out of nowhere.
Staying hydrated during your travels is a must, so don’t forget to pack a small reusable water bottle. You’ll walk a lot, and the Paris tap water is perfectly safe (and free at restaurants and cafés when you ask for une carafe d’eau).
And don’t forget the sunscreen! I wear SPF every day, no matter the season, but it’s especially important if you’ll be outside all day in the city (even on overcast days).
If you happen to forget it, you’re actually in luck. You can head to your nearest French pharmacy and find some of the best sunscreens from cult-favorite skincare brands like La Roche-Posay.
As for the rest of my beauty routine, I like to keep it minimal while traveling. I typically pack along products for a no-makeup makeup look during the day, plus a few beauty essentials to elevate my look for evenings out. A hand cream, lip balm, and a spring perfume would also be in my toiletry bag for April in Paris.
And finally, pack the everyday essentials like underwear, socks, and a long-sleeve pajama set. For more tips and travel necessities, check out my posts on Europe travel must-haves and carry-on essentials for long flights to Paris.
