Weather in Paris in December
Paris weather in December is generally cold and gray, but you’ll still get the occasional blue skies. Rain can be frequent, and snow is rare, making it more about cold, wet days than a true winter wonderland.
I highly suggest packing a compact umbrella for Paris in December. If the forecast calls for rain, also bring a pair of comfortable closed-toe shoes or waterproof ankle boots. I’d pass on rain boots though, as they can be uncomfortable for all the walking you’ll be doing in the city.
Temperatures typically range from 37°F (3°C) to 46°F (8°C), so it’s definitely coat weather, but rarely freezing. A wool coat or jacket, cozy scarf, and shoes that can handle damp streets will support your feet as you explore. Of course, always be sure to check the forecast for your exact travel dates!
Days are much shorter now, with sunrises around 8:30 AM and sunsets just after 4:50 PM. Plan outdoor activities accordingly, and consider bringing a chic wrap or tailored coat for dinners out since it can get quite cold in the evening.
Overall, December in Paris is cold and chilly, but with lots of warm layers, you’ll be able to enjoy the winter season in comfort and style.
What to Wear in Paris in December
Outerwear
Wool coat. A timeless winter staple, essential for Paris in December. Chic, warm, and effortlessly versatile, a wool coat wears well over just about anything. See my wool coat guide for the top picks of the season.
Mid-length coat. It offers slightly less coverage than a long wool coat, but it’s also much easier to pack. I love a short wool piece for layering or swapping in for variety.
Leather jacket. For a cooler, more casual vibe, a leather jacket works beautifully layered over knits and scarves. I would opt for something a bit thicker to ensure you stay cozy. Leave any paper-thin perfectos at home.
Tops
Knitwear. December in Paris calls for any and all sweaters. Classic crewnecks, cozy cardigans, and chunky knits you can mix, match, and layer for effortless Parisian style.
Turtleneck sweaters. Sleek and sophisticated, a fitted turtleneck is Parisian at its simplest. Play with a palette of colors to make your neutral outfits stand out.
Thermal tees. When temperatures start to approach freezing, it’s worth having a few thermal tees on hand. I love Uniqlo Heattech for their affordability and range of weights.
Button-up shirt. Optional, but a crisp button-up can quickly refine any outfit. During December, you might not wear it on its own, but wear it under a sweater for a peek of collar.
Silky blouse. Perfect for shows, concerts, jazz bars, or dinner out. A dressier blouse adds subtle elegance and elevates any winter look. It’s optional, but something to consider based on your own Paris itinerary.
Bottoms
Dark wash denim. My go-to for Parisian winters, particularly dark washes that feel more polished and seasonally appropriate. Skinny, straight, wide-leg, or bootcut all work (I’ve seen all styles and silhouettes on the streets of Paris), so choose what feels best.
Tailored pants. For a smarter look, a tailored pant is always a chic choice. Thicker fabrics like wool or a wool blend are essential for staying warm. You can even layer tights or thermals underneath if you need an extra layer on colder days.
Knit or wool skirts. If you want a skirt option, a knit or wool jupe is perfect. Mini to midi lengths work well as long as you have warm tights to go with. Pair with knee-high boots or Mary Janes for a classic Parisian silhouette.
What about dresses? I didn’t include any in this capsule wardrobe, but they are still very much a December option, as long as you plan for layers. Knit or long-sleeve midi dresses would be my first choices for December. Just be sure to style them with tights, boots, and a wool coat to stay warm for all of your Parisian adventures.
Shoes
Sneakers. You’ll certainly need a comfortable pair of walking shoes for Paris. A broken-in, stylish pair is essential for exploring Parisian streets. Even if you think you won’t need them, you probably will. Slim styles from Adidas or New Balance are everywhere right now, but chunkier options work if you prefer extra support.
Ankle boots. A low, thick heel makes these great for day-to-night outfits. Flatter Chelsea boots are another stylish, practical option that are popular for Paris in the winter.
Loafers. The right balance of style and comfort, loafers can be dressed up with tailored trousers or kept casual with jeans. Again, only pack a pair that you actually feel comfortable walking in. Paris is not the best city to break in your new shoes.
Knee-high boots. Optional, but perfect for pairing with skinny jeans and skirts. A tall boot takes up more space in your suitcase (which is why I didn’t include them in this capsule), but if you love them, they’re worth packing.
With all of the walking you’ll do (not to mention the slippery cobblestone streets), practical footwear is arguably the most important part of any Paris packing list. For damp days, make sure to have at least one pair of waterproof shoes. Not necessarily rain boots, but something you don’t mind getting a little wet.
If a dressier dinner is on your itinerary, you might bring a simple block heel or Mary Jane too.
Accessories
Scarf. No Parisian winter outfit is complete without a scarf (and the French are obsessed with them). Lately I’ve been seeing cashmere and wool bandanas everywhere. You might also want a long wool or cashmere style that you can wrap multiple times to seriously stay warm.
Hat. Keep your head and ears warm while looking effortlessly stylish. Structured wool hats are popular with many of the French brands right now, but classic beanies, earmuffs or headbands work just as well. Choose a neutral color that complements your coat collection.
Gloves. Protect your hands from the December chill with a warm pair of gloves. I love wool and leather options as well as trendier faux fur styles.
Belt. Bulky knits and coats can make accessorizing tricky, but a belt is one piece that instantly transforms your winter looks. Slim or wide, leather or suede, pick one that suits your style (and the rest of your Paris packing list).
Crossbody bag. A crossbody bag is perfect for sightseeing and running errands. Look for a style with multiple compartments to keep your essentials organized while leaving your hands free for coffee, pastries, or your camera.
Sunglasses. Winter sun in Paris can be surprisingly bright, especially when it reflects off wet streets or holiday lights. No matter the season, I always pack a stylish pair of sunnies.
Warm socks. Often overlooked but essential. Wool or cashmere-blend socks keep your feet cozy in boots and prevent the chill from ruining a long day of walking. My favorites are from Calzedonia.
Another word on bags: if you like a little extra space (I know I like to haul around my water bottle, souvenirs, etc.), a lightweight tote works well too. Just don’t overstuff if you’re out and about all day.
Along with your favorite everyday jewelry, I love a pair of statement earrings for dinners. Winter layers can make it difficult to accessorize, but something like oversized studs upgrade any cold-weather fit. Hair accessories too! Barrettes, clips, or silk scarves tied in your hair look especially elegant this time of year.

What to Pack for Paris in December
Now that we’ve covered what to wear in Paris this December, let’s talk about the little extras that make a big difference during your trip.
I don’t rely on my travel steamer as much in winter as I do in spring or summer, when wrinkle-prone fabrics like cotton and linen dominate my suitcase, but it’s still handy for keeping wool coats, jackets, and tailored trousers looking crisp. Before packing one, check if your hotel or Airbnb provides an iron.
Wool coats have a tendency to attract lint, so a mini lint roller can be good to have on-hand.
Layering is key in December, which is why I always bring a few thermal pieces. The Uniqlo Heattech line is my favorite for serious warmth. They’re quite affordable, and there are options for different temperature ranges.
And while air-conditioning is rare in Paris, heating isn’t an issue, so don’t worry about freezing indoors.
Rain and occasional snow are more common this time of year, so a compact umbrella is indispensable for staying dry on city streets.
It’s easy to forget to hydrate in the colder months, so remember to pack a reusable water bottle. You’ll walk a lot, and the Paris tap water is perfectly safe (and free at restaurants and cafés when you ask for une carafe d’eau).
It’s also the start of cold season, so pack a small supply of tissues. Should you need anything, just look for your nearest French pharmacy.
And don’t forget the sunscreen! I wear SPF every day, even in the winter, but it’s especially important if you’ll be outside all day in the city (even on overcast days).
As for the rest of my beauty routine, I like to keep it minimal while traveling. I typically pack along products for a no-makeup makeup look during the day, plus a few beauty essentials to elevate my look for evenings out. A hand cream, lip balm, and a fall perfume would also be in my toiletry bag.
And finally, pack the everyday essentials like underwear, socks, and a long-sleeve pajama set. For more tips on travel must-haves, check out my full post on carry-on essentials for long flights to Paris.
