Work Capsule Wardrobe Checklist
Building a versatile work wardrobe starts with the essentials. Here are the must-have workwear pieces that every professional should have in her closet. These timeless staples will form the foundation of your daily office looks.
Outerwear
Trench coat. A true wardrobe icon, the trench coat is especially perfect for workwear. Once the temperatures drop, swap it for a long wool coat to stay warm with the same polished silhouette.
Blazer. Nothing sharpens an office look like a blazer. I’d suggest sticking to neutrals (like black, navy, brown, beige, or gray) for maximum versatility. Wear yours with dresses, skirts, or trousers to look totally tailored.
Tweed jacket. For a softer twist on suiting, reach for a tweed jacket. It’s feminine, plus brings texture to your workwear rotation. This style from Maje has a lovely collar and buttons that will quickly elevate the simplest of base layers.
Tops
Crewneck sweater. The office can be notoriously chilly, so having a knit on hand is always a good idea. I love this neutral crewneck that goes with just about anything.
Light blue button-up shirt. A classic button-up in white or light blue is the backbone of workwear. Look for a tailored fit that tucks neatly into skirts or trousers and layers under blazers or cardigans.
Drapey blouse. Along with crisp shirts, I also love softer blouses. This one from Aritzia has a softer silhouette that feels polished yet feminine and transitions easily from office hours to after-work plans.
Striped button-up shirt. Variety is everything when it comes to workwear tops. Stock up on shirts in varying colors, patterns, and sleeve lengths. A striped option (like this red version) adds just enough punch to elevate pared-back neutrals.
Bottoms
Midi dress. A dress is the ultimate one-and-done solution for work. I love a classic sheath dress, but really any midi length can be styled for the office. This fine knit style from Claudie Pierlot is my favorite pick.
Pencil skirt. The pencil skirt is what every office muse has hanging in her closet. Just like with dresses, choose a longer cut that hits at the knee or below for an office-ready silhouette you can wear on repeat.
Tailored pants. Perfectly cut pants are one of my most worn basics. No matter if you prefer slimmer styles or looser fits, you really won’t regret adding a few pairs to your work wardrobe. Even better, match them with your blazer in the same color for a modern suit set.
Khaki pants. Once you find a flattering fit, diversify with a couple of different colorways: black, navy, brown, beige or tan. If you’re on the petite side, a cropped version works beautifully with loafers or even ballet flats.
Dark wash jeans. For casual Fridays or smart-casual offices, denim is worth having on hand. A deep indigo wash reads more polished than lighter blues. And of course, nothing distressed! I’m currently loving bootcut and subtly flared styles that can also be worn in more professional settings.
Accessories
Black tote bag. No work wardrobe is complete without a structured carryall. A sleek tote or briefcase can accommodate your laptop, documents, and other daily essentials organized all while tying your look together. I’ve curated a list of even more work bags to help you find your favorite!
Burgundy tote bag. Once you have the basics covered, consider a second tote in a statement shade. To me, burgundy is a chic choice, especially if your work wardrobe contains mostly neutrals. I love the beautiful shape and color of this Polène style.
Printed scarf. A lightweight scarf is one of the easiest ways to add some oomph to your office outfits. Style a larger one draped over your shoulders or cinched as a belt, and use slimmer versions as a necktie, headband, or even wrapped around your tote handle.
Slim belt. I would suggest adding at least one belt to your work capsule. Something that you can use to define your waist over dresses, sharpen tailored pants, or give jeans a more elevated finish. This slim leather option is my top choice.
Shoes
Black loafers. The right balance of style and comfort, a black loafer lets you to move around the office with ease. I love a classic penny loafer as well as a bit loafer.
Brown loafers. I’m equally obsessed with these burgundy-brown loafers from Sézane. The chunkier sole adds just the right amount of lift.
Mary Jane pumps. A pair of heels instantly sharpens any office outfit. Pointed-toe pumps will be forever timeless, but this Mary Jane style is what I’ve been eyeing lately.
Leather sneakers. For casual days or commuting, white leather sneakers are indispensable. The Esplar sneakers from Veja pair just as well with trousers and blazers as they do with denim after hours.
Of course, this capsule is meant to inspire you and is easily adjustable to suit your personal style and professional environment. You can add or subtract items, swap in different pieces, whatever works for you. How to Style the Work Capsule Wardrobe
Tips for Building a Work Capsule Wardrobe
Know the dress code. Before you start updating your office wardrobe, get familiar with your company's dress code. Workplaces vary in their level of formality, from business casual to business formal, so it's essential to understand what's expected. Once you know the guidelines, you can build a wardrobe that fits your company’s expectations while still reflecting your personal style.
Invest in quality basics. A versatile office wardrobe starts with high-quality essentials. Focus on getting the basics right: well-tailored pants, a classic pencil skirt, and a few well-made blouses or button-down shirts. Stick to neutral shades like black, navy, gray, and white, which are easy to mix and match for different looks.
Pick smart accessories. Accessories can make or break your office outfits. Invest in a quality leather handbag that matches your style and fits all your essentials. A few key jewelry pieces, like a simple necklace or a classic watch, can add a touch of sophistication without overpowering your look.
Choose appropriate footwear. Your shoes should be both stylish and comfortable. Closed-toe options like pumps, loafers, or block-heeled ankle boots are great choices. Steer clear of overly flashy or casual footwear, and always ensure your shoes are well-maintained and polished.
Mind your necklines and hemlines. When dressing for the office, choose modest necklines and hemlines. Avoid low-cut tops or dresses that reveal too much, and opt for skirts and dresses that hit at or just above the knee. Balance is key to maintaining a professional appearance that doesn’t feel cumbersomely modest.
