Fashionable Halloween Costumes
1. Jane Birkin
For fans of Jane Birkin and her cool ‘60s style, this might be the perfect Halloween costume for you. All you need is a babydoll dress, knee-high leather boots and of course, her signature basket bag to channel her laissez-faire vibe. And if you don’t mind getting a little crafty, you can use green yarn and some hot glue (or a temporary stitch gun) to recreate her famous “Darling” mini dress from the 1969 film “Slogan”. Even better if you can find a Serge Gainsbourg lookalike to dress up with you.

2. Peau d’Ane
This one’s a stylish costume that I’m certain no one else will be wearing. I took inspiration from “Peau d’Âne”, Jacques Demy’s 1970 campy musical fantasy that’s full of bold, balloony, and bejeweled costumes. To channel Catherine Deneuve as the princess in disguise, wear a billowy blue dress with a pair of donkey ears. Simple as that. If you want to go all out, you can add floral appliques and rhinestones to mirror her whimsical dress in the film. The perfect excuse to be a fairytale princess for a day.
3. Twiggy
Capture the ultimate ‘60s it-girl with this mod-inspired Twiggy costume. For the outfit, start with a mini shift dress. You can find several secondhand options for under $20 on sites like TheRealReal and Thredup. Accessorize with white tights, silver T-strap heels and her over-the-top ball drop earrings. Once you’ve got the fit down, turn to the real star of the look, her iconic eye makeup. There are plenty of easy-to-follow tutorials out there that show you how to get her drawn-on lower lashes and crisp cut crease. All it takes is a pigmented black kohl pencil, white eyeliner and some falses to get the Twiggy stare down. Groovy, baby.
4. Dalmatian
Need a no-effort Halloween costume that still looks chic? Just reach for your favorite animal print. Lately I’ve been spotting (no pun intended) so many polka-dot pieces, which inspired this Dalmatian look. Go all in with black-and-white spots to make your costume clear. You can totally wear this one to the office, then add a pair of dog ears before heading to your Halloween plans. Some more prints to play with are zebra, tiger, cheetah, snake, and giraffe!
5. Ringmaster
One of the easiest ways to find cool girl Halloween costumes is by looking at what they’ve worn themselves! Case in point: Jane Birkin’s dazzling ringmaster look from the Gala de L'Union des Artistes in Paris. Recreate her circus-inspired ensemble with a sequined corset, metallic microshorts, and all of the must-have accessories: a pink velvet top hat, matching bow tie, white collar and satin gloves. This costume is sure to steal the show this Halloween.
6. Madeline
This Halloween, embrace your favorite childhood character with a grown-up, fashion-forward twist. If you grew up reading the Madeline books like me, you probably loved her adorable French uniform (maybe that’s where my France obsession started). A navy blue dress is a piece you might already have in your closet. Layer a button-down shirt with a Peter Pan collar underneath to mimic Madeline’s schoolgirl look. Add a wide-brim straw hat, frilly socks, and Mary Jane heels to finish the look. If it’s chilly outside, bundle up with a navy peacoat. Now you’re ready for boarding school in Paris…or a costume party downtown.

7. Delphine and Solange
Grab your most fashionable friend and go as the French film duo, Delphine and Solange from “The Young Girls of Rochefort” (another chef-d'œuvre from Jacques Demy). If you can’t find their exact candy-colored dresses, a boatneck tank and swirly circle skirt will do the trick. Play up each sister’s signature shade with a pink or yellow beret and matching Mary Jane pumps. All that’s left is to memorize the lyrics to their catchy twin duet.

8. Marie Antoinette
Channel the decadent spirit of Sofia Coppola’s 2006 “Marie Antoinette” this Halloween. As extravagant as this costume looks, it’s surprisingly easy to pull off with a few key pieces: a silky corset, ruffled shorts, and bow-trimmed stockings (all easily found on Amazon). Don’t skip the towering wig with a pink feather to boot. Accessorize like a queen with pearls, a lace fan, satin gloves, and a pastel pouch for carrying your Halloween treats. Let them eat candy.
9. Mia Wallace
Dance (and dress) like Uma Thurman’s iconic Mia Wallace from “Pulp Fiction”. This one is a quick, last-minute costume that you might already have hanging in your closet. Just pair a white button-down shirt with black capris, a black bob wig and red nails. A dab of fake blood under your nose and a fake cigarette are the essential finishing touches. Worn by celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens and Emily Ratajkowski, this costume is certified cool girl-approved.
10. Cheerleader
A classic for a reason, you can never go wrong with a sporty cheerleader costume. It also happens to be a cinch to pull together before October 31st. Throw on a cheer uniform or layer a crewneck sweatshirt over a pleated mini skirt. Don’t forget your pom-poms, high socks and a pair of comfy sneakers (plus, your pep). Make it your own by wearing your favorite team’s colors. I wore this one last year in France, and my friends couldn’t stop calling me the “pom-pom girl”. Needless to say it was a hit.
11. Sharon Tate
Pay homage to the timeless beauty and style of the 1960s by dressing up as Sharon Tate. All that’s required is a black turtleneck, A-line mini skirt and white patent go-go boots to achieve Tate’s 60’s look from “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”. And if you don’t have her golden locks: a blonde wig works like a charm.
12. Queen Charlotte
If you can’t get enough of Netflix's hit series "Bridgerton," why not channel Queen Charlotte this spooky season? To get her Regency era style, find a floral embroidery gown, preferably in a pastel shade. Adorn yourself with satin gloves, a tiara, dainty rhinestone accessories and a delicate fan to match. Regal and romantic.
13. Witch
This fashionable take on the classic witch costume is perfect if you want to dress up without dressing up. Bring out your favorite LBD and matching heels. Black mesh gloves and a pointed hat will turn you into a not-so-scary, yet oh-so-cool witch for Halloween. Go glam with smoky eyes, dark lipstick, and bold jewelry. The best part is a witch costume is endlessly customizable. You can make it as minimal or dramatic as you like.
14. Daphne Blake
Bright, groovy and totally iconic, fashion girls love this costume inspired by Daphne Blake from the live-action "Scooby-Doo” movie. It’s all about her quintessential purple dress, matching headband, and lime green scarf. Finish the look with white or lavender knee-high boots, and you’re ready to solve any Halloween mystery in style. Bonus points if you bring along a Fred (or a Velma) as your accomplice.
