As the days start getting longer and winter slowly escapes us, there is no better time to bring your space back to life with a spring home refresh. Although spring cleaning often steals the spotlight during the season, there are several other ways to update your space beyond scrubbing down every corner.

Refreshing your home for spring doesn’t require a massive renovation or brand-new furniture either. With a few easy updates, you can brighten up your home for the warmer months ahead. To get inspired, here are 9 ways to refresh your space for spring.

9 Simple Ways to Refresh Your Home for Spring

1. Start with a Spring Clean

Before considering your décor, it’s important to tidy up your space to start with a clean canvas. Kickstart your spring home refresh with a spring cleaning session using the checklist below. You can add more items to this list for an even deeper cleaning, but these tasks are a great way to help you quickly spruce up your space.

As you check these easy cleaning and organizing tasks off your list, make note of any areas of your home that need some extra attention. 2. Swap Your Scents

Once your space is tidy, you can add your favorite candles or diffusers. Swap out winter scents for spring aromas that will freshen up your home and evoke notes of the current season. Floral scents like iris, rose and jasmine are classic for spring, but don’t forget about fresher notes like citrus, mandarin and bergamot. It’s no surprise that Diptyque creates some of my favorite spring scents. Try their litchi candle on your coffee table or add one of their luxurious reed diffusers in your entryway to instantly refresh your home for spring.

This season is all about tomato, including scents for the home. To add a fresh aroma to your space, try embracing this vegetal scent for spring. Whether opting for the lavish Loewe rendition or the budget-friendly Outdoor Fellow's Tomato Vine candle, or even the Boy Smells Gardener candle with a sweeter tomato note, any choice will evoke the upcoming warmer months.

3. Incorporate Some Color

I usually opt for neutral colors during the cold season, but spring is the perfect season to incorporate some color. Try a floral duvet, a colorful throw pillow, or a funky art poster to instantly brighten up your home without breaking the bank. Small home accessories like candles, flowers, and books are another great way to add a subtle pop of color to your space. Bold hues and bright neons are fun to use in spring, but if they don’t suit your space, opt for shades like blush, sage green, soft blue or almost any pastel.

4. Add a Basket

A natural fiber basket is an easy, functional way to refresh your space for spring. Use larger baskets to store blankets and magazines, and opt for smaller baskets to hold your keys, stationary, or anything that you need to be accessible but out of sight. I use a large wicker basket to organize my exercise equipment like my yoga mat, exercise bands and light hand weights. You’ll always find a good use for a simple basket.

5. Opt for Lighter Fabrics

From heavy duvet covers to bulky knit throws, it’s time to store any thick textiles and replace them with lighter fabrics like cotton or linen. You can add a pop of color as mentioned above, or choose a white or neutral fabric to easily brighten up your space.

Don’t forget to swap out any dark drapes or shades for a more lightweight option. Try a white linen curtain to instantly freshen up your home for spring. They’ll let more light into your home as more sunny days arrive. You can also replace any dark towels and rugs with lighter options.

6. Go for Greenery

Bring the outdoors in by adding plants and flowers to your space. Indoor plants are proven to boost our happiness, reduce stress and even remove toxins from the air, so why not invest in some greenery for your home? Try an aloe vera plant, a bird’s nest fern or another easy-to-care-for plant for spring. Pick up a brightly colored bouquet from your florist or garden. Planters and vases are just as important as the flora they hold, so choose stylish, high-quality options for displaying your plants and flowers.

7. Spruce Up Your Outdoor Space

If you’re dreaming of dining al fresco on the patio or sipping your morning coffee on the balcony, then don’t forget to freshen up your outdoor space. You don’t need a full renovation to update its look for spring. Instead add bright cushions, crisp neutral placements or colorful lanterns. If you have the space (and a green thumb), consider starting a spring garden. For a balcony, hang plants from the walls and railings of your balcony or stock your space with pots of herbs, succulents, etc.

8. Freshen Up Your Kitchen

There are several easy ways to refresh your kitchen for the springtime. Swap any dark dinner plates, cups and serveware for a light-colored option like white or cream. Similarly, you can opt for spring-appropriate table linens by choosing neutral or brightly colored tablecloths, placemats, and napkins. Play around with patterns to add more interest to your kitchen. Add floral porcelain dishes, checked tea towels, or color-block placemats to add a touch of something unique to your kitchen.

Each season I like to buy a new cookbook to try new recipes. The recently released The Gut-Loving Cookbook is on my wishlist for the spring season. It features several recipes and insights on how the way we eat impacts our gut health. The New York Times Cooking: No-Recipe Recipes Cookbook is another newer cookbook with simple, everyday meals using fridge and pantry staples.

9. Rethink Holiday Decor

Although everyone has their personal tastes, I tend to avoid holiday-themed decor as I find it sometimes looks tacky and only lasts a few weeks before I have to take it down. If you celebrate popular spring holidays like St. Patrick’s Day and Easter, consider passing on the seasonal decor and opting for chic, timeless pieces to refresh your home for spring. If you enjoy decorating for the holidays, keep it simple and avoid redoing your entire space just for one occasion.
