Sparkling blue waters, charming villages, and seafront promenades—it’s easy to see why the French Riviera is one of the most sought-after vacation spots.

From Saint-Tropez to Nice, the sun-drenched coastline of southern France has long been synonymous with refined leisure and glamorous style. All of your favorite style icons like Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn have been spotted there.

If you’re lucky enough to be planning a trip to the Côte d’Azur this summer, consider this your ultimate French Riviera style guide. I’m sharing exactly what to wear in the French Riviera, plus outfit ideas that transition from casual beach days to chic evenings out. I’ve also put together a mini capsule wardrobe to help you pack smart and stylishly with key pieces that suit the French Riviera dress code.

And even if a Mediterranean getaway isn’t on your itinerary, these looks bring chic coastal style to wherever you are (so you can savor summer just as they do in the south of France). Here is your ultimate guide to French Riviera style for summer 2025.

Packing for summer in Paris? Check out my guide on what to wear in Paris in summer.

Weather in the French Riviera

Summer on the French Riviera is typically warm and sunny with average temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to high 80s. Coastal areas tend to be slightly cooler and more humid since their closer to the sea, while inland areas can get hotter and drier.

Summer days are long with the sun setting late in the evening, so you’ll have plenty of daylight for exploring villages and sunbathing seaside.

The Mediterranean Sea warms up considerably in summer, with average water temperatures reaching around 80 degrees. It’s truly the best time for swimming, snorkeling and other water activities.

Rainfall is minimal during summer, so you can leave the raincoat and umbrella at home. A broad-spectrum sunscreen, however, is an absolute must for the sunny climate. I’ve already rounded up a list of the best French sunscreens to add to your beach bag.

To be prepared for anything, check the forecast a few weeks before your trip and adjust your packing list accordingly.

French Riviera Style

The dress code along the French Riviera is all about effortless elegance. You’ll want to keep your fashion choices laid-back—just like you would at any beach destination—but still refined for dining al fresco or lounging in the Mediterranean sun. Compared to the style of the Amalfi Coast, French Riviera dressing takes a more glamorous, refined approach.

The quiet luxury aesthetic defines much of French Riviera style for locals and visitors alike, but always with a coastal vibe. Key pieces you’ll spot everywhere include breezy sundresses, linen shirts, basket bags, and leather sandals.

When it comes to color, bright hues that match the azure water and vivid coastline are always a good idea, but a more understated palette works beautifully too. Neutrals help keep your packing list down, since everything goes together in a well-planned summer travel capsule. Plus, the pieces you invest in look just as classic year after year.

The south of France is diverse, so your wardrobe might vary depending on the specific city or village you visit. Inland towns like Aix-en-Provence or Avignon feel more relaxed and rustic, while the French Riviera is unmistakably laid-back and luxe.

Since French Riviera summers are hot and dry, be sure to prioritize breathable pieces on your packing list. Natural fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk do wonders for combating the heat.

Evenings on the coast can be cooler, so pack a lightweight jacket, cardigan, or shawl that can easily be added to your outfit when needed. This linen silk cashmere shawl is such a chic option that you can cozy up with on chilly nights. And it won’t take up too much space in your luggage.

One-Piece Swimsuit

Southern France boasts some of the most stunning beaches in the world. When packing for beach days, having stylish swimwear is essential (whether or not you plan to take a dip).

The number of swimsuits you bring depends on your itinerary and how long you'll be in France, but I suggest packing at least one one-piece swimsuit—always a timeless choice that flatters virtually every body type. It’s also easy to dress up with linen pants and espadrilles for a casual dinner after the beach.

Stick with neutrals or play with more vibrant hues, it’s totally up to you. I personally like something with a little more color to complement my neutral basics.

And if you want options, a bikini would be a great addition to your packing list too.

Beach Cover-Up

To complete your beach ensemble, bring a stylish sarong or cover-up that pairs well with your swimwear. A lightweight cotton dress is an easy-breezy option, while a long linen-cotton button-down gives you a bit more coverage for your arms and shoulders under the midday sun.

I also love the look of a linen shirt paired with matching shorts, which you can wear on beach days or dress up with sandals for a stroll through town.

White Dress

A simple white dress is a quintessential staple for summer in southern France. You can wear it while wandering around town during the day and elevate it with heeled sandals and a fun bag for dinner by the sea. It’s one of those pieces that’s elevated without trying too hard—just like French style itself.

Look for lightweight fabrics like linen, cotton, or poplin to stay cool in the Mediterranean heat. Flowy silhouettes and romantic details like eyelets, smocking or puff sleeves are also perfect for the French Riviera.

Truly, it’s one of the best summer dresses every woman should have in her wardrobe, whether she's vacationing or not.

Maxi Dress

Make the maxi dress your uniform on the French Riviera. It’s a one-and-done piece that feels as glamorous as it is easy, and all you have to do is coordinate your accessories. Style yours with strappy sandals and sculptural statement earrings for an elegant evening look. By day, lean into casual sophistication with sleek leather slides, oversized sunglasses, and a straw tote.

Linen Dress

The details on this dress are absolutely stunning.

Breathable and breezy, linen is one of the best summer fabrics, especially for a sunny escape to the French Riviera.

A linen mini dress is perfect for daytime when paired with woven sandals or flats and a shady sun hat. Equally as sophisticated is a midi length, which gives you a little extra coverage.

Of course, you might consider a white linen maxi for the ultimate trifecta of summer dresses. But more than anything, these are just a few elements to look for when shopping for Riviera-ready dresses.

Striped Top

A classic striped top is a French Riviera essential. Stripes for a coastal vacation might not be groundbreaking, but they’re certainly iconic.

A traditional Breton tee is always a chic choice, but you can also branch out with striped sweaters for cooler evenings or breezy linen shirts for the daytime. Pair your favorite with linen shorts and strappy sandals for an easy beachside look, or tuck it into crisp trousers for a slightly more polished take.

The most classic marinières come from French heritage brands like Saint James and Armor Lux. For more modern takes, I love Kule, Maison Labiche, and La Ligne. Last summer, I picked up a red and ecru striped tee from Le Minor while visiting their store in Lorient. I’ve already been wearing it on repeat this spring. It's a forever piece.

Linen Shirt

The Boyfriend Shirt

Linen + blue stripes = coastal cool perfection

A classic linen button-down shirt is a non-negotiable for your French vacation wardrobe. Dress it up with tailored pants and heeled sandals for a breezy dinner look, or layer it over a tank top or swimsuit for added coverage during the day.

I recommend packing a few in different colors. Start with a basic white or off-white shirt, then choose one in a brighter color that flatters your complexion.

Everlane makes some of the best linen shirts: timeless cuts, elegant colors, and all under $100. I also love J.Crew, Jenni Kayne, and With Nothing Underneath.

While we’re talking tops, consider adding a few more foundational basics to your suitcase like a crewneck tee and a layerable cotton tank (this scoop neck style is so chic). When it comes to easy layering options, you won’t regret having lots of versatile basics.

Denim

While the French Riviera calls for breezy linens and floaty silks, the right pair of denim can also be added to your suitcase.

Lighter washes like pale blue, white, or ecru are just right for summer. I rarely travel without a pair of ecru jeans in my summer suitcase. Whether I’m in Brittany or Southern France, it’s the perfect piece for those cooler evenings when I want to look polished but still feel relaxed.

Pair them with an oversized button-down or a striped tee for effortless daytime outings, and switch to a silky camisole and linen blazer for chic waterfront dinners. Cropped, straight-leg silhouettes feel especially fresh and pair beautifully with espadrilles or strappy sandals.

Denim shorts and skirts also fit effortlessly into a south of France wardrobe.

Tailored Shorts

Shorts are a given for warm-weather packing, but to truly capture that south of France elegance, opt for a more tailored silhouette. Think crisp cotton or lightweight linen, both breathable fabrics that keep you cool while instantly elevating even the simplest outfit. Perfect for beachside strolls, open-air markets, or early evening apéritifs, they bring a refined polish to your casual wardrobe.

If shorts aren’t your style, a breezy poplin skirt or a pair of capri pants offers the same effortless chic (and both are incredibly on trend this season).

And you don't have to splurge to get the look. This linen-blend pair from H&M is one of my favorite finds. Under $30, available in classic white and navy, and endlessly versatile.

Linen or Cotton Pants

Rouje might be best known for it’s flirty French girl dresses, but they have some beautiful wardrobe staples too. These pants are simple, yet so chic for the Côte d’Azur.

Although it’s exciting to plan all of your playful vacation pieces, you need a few timeless staples too, and trousers are at the top of the list.

Lightweight and breathable, linen and cotton versions manage to look effortlessly elegant even on the hottest Mediterranean days. Style them with a Breton striped tee for a nod to nautical chic, or layer them with a button-down shirt for a matching set moment.

As for color, stick to a palette of sun-washed neutrals like white, ivory, sand, and beige for maximum versatility in your south of France wardrobe.

Just don’t forget a dual-voltage garment steamer (this one is compatible with European outlets, you just need an adapter) to keep your clothes wrinkle-free.

Espadrilles

A French girl favorite, espadrilles have become synonymous with effortless Riviera glamour. You can find them in a variety of styles and colors, from lace-up wedges for evenings to slip-on flats for daytime. Unlike stiletto heels, espadrilles are actually walkable and won’t have you tripping on the cobblestone streets.

Spanish shoemaker Castañer makes some of the best espadrilles around, worn by everyone from Grace Kelly to Jeanne Damas.

Leather Slides

The chicest of French women pack a pair of leather slides for a coastal getaway. They go with everything in your suitcase, from breezy sundresses and tailored shorts to linen separates and even a swimsuit and sarong for the beach.

The Hermès Oran sandal continues to be a summer icon along the Riviera. It comes in a variety of colors and materials, but classic leather styles in tan, black and white are among the most popular.

If you’re after something more affordable, these Hadyn slides are just as sleek and timeless, but under $60.

For beach days, I like to toss in a pair of inexpensive flip-flips that I don’t mind wearing in the sand. These square-toe flip flops from Old Navy look just like Havaianas, but won’t set you back more than $6.

Strappy Sandals

These metallic leather sandals from Sézane are perfect for a holiday in the sun.

Strappy sandals are a quintessential choice for casual outings around town or at the beach. Gladiator sandals are incredibly popular right now as well as metallic finishes.

A true Riviera staple, K. Jacques sandals are handcrafted in Saint-Tropez and loved by celebrities and locals alike. Their timeless silhouettes and superior craftsmanship make them a must-have for south of France summers.

Sneakers

Sneakers are a smart option if your itinerary includes a lot of walking or hiking. Plus, you can wear them with your summer airport outfits. Choose a white leather sneaker with a clean silhouette that pairs with almost anything, including all of your summer dresses. Veja is the brand that I consistently recommend for stylish, comfortable sneakers that are perfect for travel.

Sunglasses

Your south of France wardrobe isn't complete without a few sensible accessories.

Summer demands sunglasses, be they oversized frames, cool wayfarers, or classic aviators. I’m especially drawn to cat-eye styles that channel old Hollywood glamour and feel perfectly fit for the French Riviera. Whatever style calls to you (and ideally, suits your face shape), be sure to include at least one chic pair on your packing list.

A couple of my go-to eyewear brands include Le Specs and Jimmy Fairly (I’ve been wearing the Marilu sunglasses for a few seasons now).

Jewelry

These pearl earrings are the perfect finishing touch for any Riviera outfit.

Along with your everyday jewelry, consider packing a pair of statement earrings to take your outfits from daytime explorations to evening soirées. Pearls, shells, and nautical motifs are all perfectly fitting for the coastal glamour of the French Riviera.

Good arm candy is equally essential. Stackable bangles are easy to pair with flowing maxi dresses for a night out.

I also love the look of layering multiple necklaces for a beachy, insouciant vibe. Long gold chains, pearl pendants, and colorful beaded strands worn solo or layered together are a simple way to add texture and color to an otherwise basic look.

Straw Tote

Small Reed Basket

This new basket bag from Vanessa Bruno is at the top of my wish list this summer.

No French summer wardrobe is complete without a straw tote, perfect for carrying all your essentials to the beach and beyond. Parisian women famously tote them around the city, but they’re even more practical and chic for a Riviera escape.

Muuñ makes some of the best basket bags. To me, the medium straw Sophie tote bag is the perfect size: roomy enough for sunscreen, a book and a pair of sunnies, but slim enough to wear all day long sans shoulder ache.

This under-$100 option from Mango is equally as elegant in addition to the best-selling Justine basket bag from Sézane.

Sun Hat

A sun hat is a summer essential, not just for style, but for protecting your face, neck, and scalp from the sun's rays. For Mediterranean vacays, a wide-brim floppy hat is undeniably glamourous. And you can go as big as you want. If there’s ever a moment to wear dramatic, cinematic accessories, it’s now.

If suitcase space is limited, a smaller raffia bucket hat is just as chic but a bit more practical. Everyone loves the Lack of Color Inca raffia bucket hat. It’s simple but pairs beautifully with everything from linen sundresses to swimsuits.

Structured styles like boaters and boleros are also popular in the Riviera. I’m currently coveting this stunning handwoven Bolero hat from Cuyana. I love classic pieces that still feel unique, and the mango-colored ribbon is a small detail that makes this hat even more luxe.

Scarf

south of france attire

In Mediterranean shades of blue, this scarf is a gorgeous accessory for summer. And it comes from Sandro’s latest collection paying tribute to French-American artist Louise Bourgeois.

One of the chicest trends making a major comeback is the Old Hollywood-style headscarf, and it feels tailor-made for a French Riviera wardrobe. Knot it elegantly around your neck, thread it through the loops of your trousers as an impromptu belt, or (my personal favorite) tie it as a headscarf for a look that channels classic Riviera glamour. I always travel with a scarf or two for extra styling options without taking up much space in my suitcase.

Of course, Hermès remains the gold standard when it comes to silk scarves, but if you’re not ready to splurge $500, Longchamp is an incredible alternative. My boyfriend’s mother gifted me one of their silk scarves a few years ago, and I still find new ways to wear it. It's the perfect pop of color to elevate any outfit.

For something more minimalist and quietly luxurious, I’m also a fan of Lescarf.

Outerwear

You can expect super sunny days on the French Riviera, but don't be fooled into thinking you can pack solely for sunshine. Nights along the coast can get surprisingly cool, so it’s a good idea to pack light, versatile outerwear that you can layer over your evening outfits.

I’d highly recommend bringing a lightweight blazer in linen or cotton. It looks incredibly polished over casual and evening looks while remaining breathable enough for balmy nights.

A silk, cotton, or linen scarf is another Riviera staple. Light enough to toss into your bag by day, it can be draped around your shoulders after sunset, or even tied as an elegant beach cover-up when lounging seaside.

Lately, I’m loving the return of the poncho. Airy, refined, and frankly, so chic, it’s just as perfect for summer in the city as it is a coastal getaway—I’m definitely planning to wear mine for both this season! During cool nights on the Cote d’Azur, wear it with crisp linen trousers and strappy heels.

Evening Attire

south of france dress

Long, flowy maxi dresses are my favorite for evenings on the French Riviera.

As the sun sets in the south of France, you can find both tourists and locals flocking to seaside restaurants and bars. The daytime dress code becomes slightly more formal at night while maintaining a sense of casual elegance.

For a romantic dinner overlooking the sea, consider wearing a flowing maxi dress or a silky slip dress. Layer it with a linen blazer or drape a lightweight scarf across your shoulders. Bold prints paired with minimal accessories feel chic and confident. Alternatively, a monochrome dress sets the stage for a colorful clutch and gleaming bangles.

For a more casual evening of dinner and drinks, linen pants and a statement blouse are a lovely balance of comfort and sophistication. Dress it up by trading your leather slides for a pair of strappy heels or espadrille wedges.

When it comes to bags, a woven or wicker clutch is the perfect playful-meets-polished piece for Riviera nights.
