Over the years, I’ve come to realize that having a few go-to airport “uniforms” makes travel so much easier. Whether it’s a quick one-hour flight or a red-eye across time zones, figuring out what to wear to the airport can be surprisingly tricky. Sometimes I need something cozy enough to nap in, other times an outfit that still looks pulled together when I land and head straight to a meeting.

No matter the trip, I always look for airport outfits that are fashionable and flight-friendly. Something that doesn’t wrinkly easily, adapts to changing temperatures and makes me feel like myself even after a long-haul flight. And if I’m packing light with just a carry-on, it’s even better if it’s a look that I can rewear later in the trip.

Lately, I’ve been turning to the kinds of pieces I keep seeing all over Instagram: elevated loungewear sets, relaxed tailoring, slim sneakers, and fluid outerwear that looks good draped over any outfit.

If you’ve been wondering how to look chic while traveling, these 8 casual-chic airport outfit ideas are a good place to start. They’re comfortable, stylish, and low-effort, exactly what you want when you’re navigating TSA lines and time zones.

Airport Outfit Ideas

1. Baseball Cap + Slouchy Jeans

Look effortlessly cool at the airport by wearing a cashmere crewneck and baggy jeans. Tonal dressing is oh-so-chic, which is why I took inspiration from the gray-on-gray palette in the photo above. Top it all off with sporty staples: a casual baseball cap and white sneakers.

What really pulls it all together is a slouchy tote bag and matching carry-on. This travel look is one of my favorites for short flights when you want to feel comfy but still pulled together. Plus it transitions seamlessly from the airport to city streets.

2. Cashmere Wrap + White Denim

This might be the most controversial outfit on this list. Not everyone is a fan of white at the airport, but I would definitely wear this tee and denim combo on a shorter flight. Layer it with a luxe cashmere wrap to keep you warm in the airplane cabin (and protect the backside of your jeans).

Slip-on ballet flats make breezing through security a no-brainer, while still keeping the look refined. Accessorize with a luxe duffle bag and classic sunnies to slide on when you land. If you dare to wear white, this might just be one of the chicest airport outfits for jet-setting in style.

3. Knit Cardigan + Suede Loafers

When in doubt, go for a classic base: a white cotton tee tucked into stretchy jeans. Layer on a thicker knit cardigan for color, texture, and warmth. I chose one in a rich chocolate brown (the “it” color of the moment).

What takes this simple outfit up a notch is the thoughtful coordination with the brown suede loafers and matching leather duffle. The similar shades make it feel much more intentional. A timeless wristwatch is the icing on the cake for this airport-ready look.

4. Crew Sweatshirt + Straight-Leg Jeans

I’m all for wearing sweats to the airport, especially on an overnight flight. But if you want to slightly elevate your airport loungewear, try pairing your sweatshirt with straight-leg jeans or tailored trousers. A white tee peeking out at the collar is always a thought little detail, and loafers instantly make the outfit more polished. Since the look is more minimal, I styled it with a big braided bag that adds textural interest while still staying incredibly timeless.

5. Fluid Jacket + Jogger Pants

Who says comfort can't be chic? This look proves you really can have both (and I’m definitely copying it for my next flight). Start with a pair of jersey joggers and layer on a wrap jacket or cardigan. This style doesn’t drown you in fabric and actually gives you some shape. Plus, it’s easy to slip on and off throughout your travels.

Yellow sneakers bring a trendy pop of color that contrasts beautifully with a burgundy tote bag. I often reach for neutrals when I travel, but accessorizing with color is a simple styling trick to brighten up a neutral base. Add blue-light glasses to your list of carry-on essentials for a final touch. They’re not only cute but also perfect for scrolling or streaming without the eye strain. The ultimate travel uniform for staying stylish at 30,000 feet.

6. Relaxed Blazer + Ballet Flats

For this travel outfit, we’re going back to the basics. The tee and jeans duo comes in handy again, but this time, I’ve elevated it with a relaxed blazer. Nothing too tailored or restrictive—an oversized fit is best for being comfortable on the plane.

Drape a crewneck sweater around your shoulders (since it’s never a bad idea to have an extra layer). For the finish touches: cream ballet flats and a classic carryall—I swear by the Cuyana Easy tote, which also happens to make a great travel gift. This quiet-luxury look is perfect for your next short-haul flight.

7. Trench Coat + Wide-Leg Pants

The chicest travelers know: layering is key. Temperatures can go from sweltering to freezing in minutes depending on your destination. To layer up stylishly, start with a simple tee or ribbed tank, then add a lightweight knit for a little extra warmth. Flowy wide-leg trousers are a more elevated alternative to sweats but are just as comfortable.

A trench coat smartens up your outfit (and will save you some room in your luggage). Just be sure to choose one made with synthetic fibers. They don’t wrinkle as much as cotton so you can easily fold it and stash it in the overhead bin without worry. Round things out with a roomy weekender bag and slim sneakers for an airport look that’s equal parts elegant and effortless.

8. Matching Set + Slim Sneakers

If a typical sweat set makes you feel like you just rolled out of bed, this cashmere version is the upgrade you’ve been looking for. It’s every bit as cozy as your favorite airport athleisure but looks far more refined. I added on a classic crewneck sweater for even more layers.

For footwear, you can’t go wrong with a pair of sleek sneaks (ideally a walking shoe that can double for long days of sightseeing). Round it out with a roomy tote and your staple jewelry for a travel look that keeps you comfortable while getting from point A to point B.

What Not to Wear on a Plane

I’m not usually one to preach fashion rules. I think if you love it, wear it. But when it comes to flying, there are a few things I’d seriously avoid (mostly for your health and comfort).

Tight Clothes

Skip anything that clings too much like leggings, skinny jeans, and tight tops. They're not ideal for circulation, especially on long flights. The same goes for your undergarments. Instead of an underwire bra and lacy bikini, stick to breathable cotton basics that won’t dig in or irritate your skin.

Shorts & Mini Skirts

It’s so tempting in the summer, but planes aren’t the cleanest environments. The seats can be incredibly germy, so sitting directly on them with bare skin isn’t a good idea. I’d recommend a midi or maxi skirt for extra coverage. Or swap shorts for a loose-fitting pair of pants that still feel airy for warm-weather destinations.

High Heels

As for footwear, there are a few things I would advise against. First is heels, particularly ultra-high stilettos. Unless you live in them, there is no reason to wear them to the airport. If you're heading straight to a meeting or event, try a block heel or kitten heel. Otherwise, pack them in your carry-on to slip into post-flight.

Sandals

Sandals might seem like a good choice for your summer airport outfits, but I’d avoid having your feet exposed on a plane. It’s not the most hygienic setting, and then there’s the whole foot odor potential (yikes). If you’re traveling somewhere tropical, go for a closed-toe mesh flat or a backless mule instead. If you really can’t give them up, at least bring along a pair of socks to cover your feet.

Denim (It Depends)

Denim might be a controversial one. Some travelers swear off denim entirely, but I’m not one of them. A loose, relaxed pair of jeans is totally fine for short-haul flights. Just skip the skinnies, and definitely save them for another day if you're flying internationally.

Are there any airport dos and don’ts you swear by? I’m curious to know what you avoid wearing on the plane.
