1. Diptyque Orphéon Eau de Parfum
Diptyque
Orphéon is a warm, woody fragrance perfect for fall. With notes of tonka bean, cedarwood, and juniper berries, it pays homage to the smoky Parisian jazz bar where Diptyque’s founders once gathered in the 1960s. But unlike many scents in this genre, Orphéon has a clean, powdery quality that makes it light enough for autumn days. It announces its presence without being too strong, leaving a subtle trail of spicy sweetness. An instant fall classic and at the top of my wishlist.
Notes: Tonka beans, cedarwood, jasmine, juniper berry
What customers say: “I am FLOORED at how great this [is]. Bravo, Diptyque. Maybe my favorite Diptyque frag to date. It truly is a beautiful skin scent with hints of smokiness and powder (in the best way) and does have a 60’s vibe to it.” —Nordstrom
2. Maison Margiela 'REPLICA' Jazz Club Eau de Toilette
Maison Margiela
Sweet tobacco, rum, and pink pepper make Jazz Club one of the most popular fall perfumes for a reason. Inspired by the ambiance of a Brooklyn jazz club, this smoky, spicy cologne brims with the aromas of cigar boxes, worn leather bar stools, and fine aged liquor. It’s moody and masculine-leaning, but incredibly wearable on everyone. I recently received a sample from Sephora and will definitely be saving it for a fall date night.
And if you want something similar for less, you can also shop a great dupe at Dossier called Woody Tobacco. I’ve always had great experiences with their perfumes.
Notes: Pink pepper, rum absolute, tobacco leaf absolute
What customers say: “Sexy, smart, singular...really no other words for it. Not overly smoky, no overwhelming leather notes, just a gorgeous scent with a perfect dry-down.” —Sephora
3. Frédéric Malle Portrait of a Lady Eau de Parfum
Frédéric Malle
From French perfumer Frédéric Malle, Portrait of a Lady is not for the faint of heart. It’s bold, opulent, and unapologetically romantic, richly layered with red rose, earthy patchouli, and velvety incense. Even though rose is often associated with spring, this oriental-floral fragrance has a warm spiciness that feels perfectly suited to autumn. One of the most iconic niche perfumes ever made.
Notes: Rose, red fruits, cinnamon, benzoin, incense, patchouli, sandalwood, castoreum
What customers say: “This is such a sophisticated oud and rose smell. It is strong-projecting and long lasting. I personally find it one of the easiest oud perfumes to wear so if you are new to heavy perfumes it will be great for you.” —Space NK
4. Maison Louis Marie No.04 Bois de Balincourt Eau de Parfum
Maison Louis Marie
Often compared to Le Labo’s Santal 33, Bois de Balincourt is a creamy sandalwood perfume with spicy cinnamon-nutmeg, vetiver and cedar notes. It’s earthy, soft, clean, and one of the best fall scents for anyone who loves a minimalist, skin-like fragrance. Subtle yet warm, this one will cling beautifully to all of your fall sweaters and scarves. It also comes in a perfume oil version, which wears closer to the skin and is perfect for layering or travel.
Notes: Sandalwood, vetiver, amber wood
What customers say: “Such a beautiful earthy, sweet and subtle fragrance…I’ve tried others but I never get as many compliments as when I’m wearing this. People ask me what it is and I almost don’t want to tell because I don’t want to let the secret out.” —Sephora
5. Guerlain Tobacco Honey Eau de Parfum
Among Guerlain’s many fall-worthy fragrances, this 2023 release is my top pick. Tobacco Honey is a sensual, golden elixir. It’s rich, warm, and decadent and to me, this perfume smells like a dollop of honey in a cup of spiced autumn tea. It opens with syrupy honey with hints of anise and clove, giving way to a heart of vanilla, sesame, and tonka bean. As it dries down, you pick up more on the woody and musk notes. A truly luxurious, almost-gourmand fall scent from one of France’s most iconic beauty brands.
Notes: Honey, cloves, anise, tobacco, vanilla, tonka, sesame, oud, sandalwood
What customers say: “I literally daydream about this scent. It’s like nothing else I’ve smelled. The tobacco is a beautiful beginning and it [ends] with a warm, strong yet gorgeous honey dry down.” —Guerlain
6. Hermès Galop d'Hermes Parfum
Hermès
Galop is probably the most elegant of fall fragrances. It marries two signature elements of Hermès and perfumery: leather and rose. Bright top notes of juicy quince and orange add a sparkling freshness that make it ideal for daytime wear, whether you're headed to the office or stepping outside to enjoy the fall foliage. I also can’t get over the bracket-shaped bottle that’s beautiful enough to keep on display.
Notes: Leather, rose, saffron, quince
What customers say: “Wearing Galop gives me the same feeling as ballet, classical music and dressage. It's beautiful, high class and refined. When you smell it, you understand. It's on another level, a whole different ball game than most of the other fragrances out there.” —Fragrantica
7. Chanel Sycomore Eau de Parfum
Chanel
Sycomore might not be what you’d typically expect from Chanel. I usually associate the French house with fresh, feminine scents suited to spring and summer, but this one is exceptional for fall. Part of the Les Exclusifs de Chanel collection, Sycomore was inspired by the spirit of autumn and the childhood of Gabrielle Chanel. Smoky vetiver takes center stage, supported by notes of cedar and a subtle trace of vanilla. The result is a pure, majestic fragrance that smells like fall in its most refined form.
And if you’re in the market for something more floral from Chanel, Coco Noir also deserves a spot among the best autumn winter fragrances.
Notes: Vetiver, sandalwood, aldehydes, tobacco, violet
What customers say: “This fragrance is incredible. Sycomore is light, it doesn't overwhelm you as some perfumes can. But the scent is delicate and stays with you all day. It's one of the best perfumes I've ever purchased.” —Chanel
8. Parfums de Marly Althaïr Eau de Parfum
Parfums de Marly
From the Parisian fragrance house Parfums de Marly, Althaïr is a warm, boozy vanilla scent that smells like the air in a French patisserie come autumn. This modern take on bourbon vanilla (introduced to France during the reign of Louis XV) is both luxurious and addictive. It’s wrapped in notes of orange blossom, cinnamon, elemi, guaiacwood, and musk, creating a rich, amber-vanilla accord that lingers beautifully on the skin. Though technically a men’s fragrance, Althaïr wears effortlessly on anyone who loves a cozy gourmand scent for fall.
Notes: Vanilla, orange blossom, cinnamon, elemi, guaiacwood, musk
What customers say: “This fragrance is simply amazing. As a woman I thought this would be to masculine but it's super feminine. It has a winter vanilla, cinnamon and bourbon scent that lasts all day.” —Nordstrom
9. Chloé Nomade Eau de Parfum
Chloé
The original Nomade perfume from Chloé is earthy, floral, and one of the best chypre fragrances for fall. Created by renowned perfumer Quentin Bisch, it features notes of oakmoss, freesia, and mirabelle plum (a fruit native to France’s Lorraine region). It’s the perfect signature scent for crisp fall days, yet versatile enough to wear year-round.
Also worth exploring are the various Nomade flankers. Nomade Absolu used to be one of my fall favorites, though sadly discontinued. However, you can find it on Amazon right now for almost 50% off!
Notes: Oakmoss, freesia, mirabelle liquor
What customers say: “I love this fragrance, it smells like a beautiful woodland fairy sleeping on a bed of soft moss, with the scent of warm florals gently dancing on the breeze. I absolutely love it.” —Sephora
10. BDK Parfums Gris Charnel Extrait De Parfum
BDK Parfums
BDK Parfums, an independent house based in Paris’s Palais Royal, is known for its modern, intimate perfumes, and Gris Charnel Extrait is my favorite for fall. This deeper, more concentrated version of the original amplifies the warmth with bold notes of patchouli, cedarwood, and spiced tea. The signature fig remains, but softened into something smokier and creamier, like a fig-infused vanilla chai. Miam. It’s aromatic and gourmand without being loud, just cozy and softly sensual. Easily one of the best perfumes for fall and winter.
Notes: Cardamom, fig, black tea, sandalwood, vanilla, cedar, patchouli
What customers say: “Exquisite fragrance. Really a clean, fresh, scent, with a perfect hint of woody sweetness. So many say this leans masculine, but the extrait version in particular to me leans feminine, at least on me. I love this one for the office or for any occasion where classy, elegant, sophistication is the vibe you are going for.” —Fragrantica
