I recently shared my favorite French skincare brands, so it only felt natural to talk about haircare next!
Few do laidback beauty quite like French women, including when it comes to their hair. Even though I’ll never give up my blowout routine, I still admire the artfully undone look that so many French women pull off perfectly.
But don’t fall for the clichés; “effortless” requires a lot more work than you’d think! It’s only fitting to explore the French haircare brands that make it easier to achieve that je ne sais quoi.
You can find most of these brands online, but I’ve also included some more niche names that you might want to save for your next trip to France!
Whether you’re dealing with dry ends, hair loss, or frizz, these are the 15 best French hair brands that will upgrade your beauty routine and give you healthier, shinier strands.
1. Christophe Robin
Christophe Robin is best known for its gentle yet highly concentrated formulas, especially for color-treated and sensitive scalps. A celebrity colorist turned haircare founder, Robin created his line to restore hair health after intensive coloring. A standout product from the Parisian haircare brand is the Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt, a cult classic that deeply cleanses the scalp while delivering essential hydration. With a focus on natural-origin ingredients and scalp care, the brand has become a favorite among beauty editors and celebrities (including the ever-iconic Catherine Deneuve).

2. Klorane
Founded in 1965, Klorane is a French pharmacy favorite known for its plant-based, science-backed formulas. Their most iconic product is their Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk, which refreshes hair without irritating the scalp. It’s so popular that one bottle is sold every 11 seconds around the world! The brand has even come out with variations for volume, detoxifying, and tinted formulas for dark hair. While their dry shampoo takes the cake, don’t sleep on their other haircare products. Whether you deal with dry, oily or thinning hair, there is a targeted line for almost every hair concern, featuring natural ingredients like chamomile, peony, and quinine.

3. Leonor Greyl
Leonor Greyl and her husband, Jean-Marie, launched their botanical-infused haircare line Leonor Greyl Paris in 1968, long before natural haircare and “clean beauty” were even a thing. Since then, the brand's eco-friendly shampoos, serums and other naturally enriched formulas have earned cult status, often spotted in the chicest salons (and beauty cabinets). Made with high-grade plant extracts, nourishing vitamins and delicate aromas, each product feels like a spa for your strands. Not to be missed: the bestselling L’Huile de Leonor Greyl, a pre-shampoo oil that protects and nourishes damaged strands and ends.

4. PHYTO
PHYTO was one of the first brands to pioneer botanical haircare, and it’s still a leader in plant-powered formulas. Launched in the 1960s by hairdresser Patrick Alès, PHYTO was born from his desire to rescue the dry, over-processed hair of his celebrity clients (Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis) with less harmful products. Today, the French haircare brand uses over 500 plant extracts across its range to treat a variety of hair types and conditions. Along with its amazing styling and repair products, PHYTO also excels in hair health from the inside out. The Phytophanère Hair & Nails Supplements are a cult favorite, especially for those dealing with thinning or hair loss.
5. Kérastase
A pillar of French luxury haircare since 1964, Kérastase has long been a favorite among hairstylists and beauty editors alike. The brand focuses on offering products and personalized in-salon treatments, all powered by scientific expertise and professional knowledge. With global ambassadors like Sydney Sweeney and Emily Ratajkowski, Kérastase has cemented its status well beyond the borders of l’Hexagone too. Among its top offerings: the Elixir Ultime L’Huile Originale, a multi-use oil that adds instant shine, smoothness, and heat protection. For overnight repair, the Nutritive 8H Magic Night Hair Serum deeply nourishes while you sleep, restoring dry, dull strands by morning.

6. René Furterer
If there’s one thing the French do exceptionally well, it’s botanical beauty, and René Furterer is one of the best in the world of plant-powered haircare. They offer something for every hair goal: thickening fine hair, reviving dyed strands, nourishing dryness, and soothing scalps. Its hero product, the Complexe 5 Stimulating Plant Concentrate, is a popular scalp treatment in France that boosts circulation and restores balance to the scalp. If you're struggling with thinning hair, this is one of the first French brands I would explore. They have an entire hair thinning routine with shampoos, serums, oils, and even supplements to improve hair density naturally sans medication. For a holistic approach to haircare, Furterer is it.

8. L’Oréal Professionnel
A favorite in both salons and homes, L’Oréal Professionnel is the professional offshoot of L’Oréal Paris. Developed with hairstylists, its high-performance formulas cater to every hair type and concern. Unlike the standard L’Oréal line, this range is slightly more premium and frequently used in salons across France. I’ve personally spotted it in many that I’ve visited! The Serie Expert Absolut Repair collection is especially popular for damaged hair. Their shampoo and conditioner are formulated with quinoa and proteins that gently cleanse, deeply nourish, and strengthen strands. L’Oréal Professionnel is a trusted brand for those who want salon-level results at home (with surprisingly reasonable price points!).

9. Balmain Hair
Balmain Hair remained unknown to me until I recently discovered their incredible spa brush. With 50 years of heritage, the designer haircare line brings the latest runway trends to your beauty routine. Each collection is inspired by backstage secrets and includes all a woman needs to create the ultimate catwalk inspired look. The brand keeps its offerings curated—small, but complete collections made up exclusively of bestsellers. One standout is the Silk Perfume, a finishing shine spray infused with silk proteins and pure organic argan oil. It delivers lightweight shine, detangles, repairs, and protects against daily damage (while leaving behind the most luxurious scent). Sleek, chic and infused with fashion DNA, Balmain Hair is the kind of brand you’ll find on the vanities of the most stylish Parisiennes.

10. David Mallett
David Mallett is one of the most internationally recognized hairstylists, originally from Australia and now based in Paris. He’s the talent behind his namesake salon as well as the ultra-exclusive salon at the Ritz Paris. He launched his eponymous haircare line in 2008 to bring salon-quality results to your routine through superior, innovative formulas. Developed in a French laboratory, the line is known for its vegan, cruelty-free, and sulfate-free products made with natural ingredients. The Gold Dust is loved adding natural body and bounce to your locks while also leaving a gorgeous gold shimmer. Another gem is the No.2 Le Volume Mask, which adds body and fullness while strengthening the hair.

11. Nuxe
Best known for its skincare, Nuxe also offers a small, luxurious haircare line that brings the same sensorial quality to your strands. Of course, the pharmacy favorite Huile Prodigieuse can be used on your ends for a boost of softness and shine. But for dedicated haircare, the High Shine Shampoo and Conditioner are amazing in their own right. Formulated with fermented pink camellia oil, they nourish, strengthen, and leave hair glossy, all while smelling delicious. I especially loved the Pre-Shampoo Nourishing Mask on my dry, thick hair during my recent winter trip to the Alps. You really can get a French girl glow from head to toe with Nuxe products.
12. Flora Lab Paris
Flora Lab Paris is a clean, science-backed haircare brand that treats your scalp and strands with the same care as skincare. Described as “molecular skin therapy for hair,” the brand’s collection includes targeted scalp treatments, nourishing masks, and beautifully scented oils designed to restore balance, strength, and shine. Each formula is infused with advanced actives like peptides, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid that work deep beneath the surface to repair the hair fiber and promote long-term health. The bestselling Miracle Repair Serum lives up to its name, restoring softness and strengthening damaged strands. If you’re ever in Paris, be sure to treat yourself at one of their luxury hair spas.

13. Cair
Cair is the clean haircare line from French brush brand, La Bonne Brosse. Designed to complement their luxurious hairbrushes, the range takes a holistic approach to hair health: free from silicones, sulfates, synthetic coatings, and harsh cleansing agents. Their latest launch, the Protective Hair Oil, was made to shield your strands from UV rays, pollution, and dryness and leave hair stronger, deeply nourished, and radiant. Each Cair product pairs perfectly with your favorite La Bonne Brosse tool, turning your regular routine into a true haircare ritual.
14. Cut by Fred
Founded in 2018 by French hairdresser Frédéric Birault, Cut by Fred began in his Parisian salon after years of working with products full of harsh, synthetic ingredients and animal derivatives. Today, the vegan haircare brand offers a full range of hair essentials for every hair type: from gentle shampoos and conditioners to hydrating masks, serums, styling mists, scalp brushes, and scrubs. Every product is cruelty-free, made in France, and thoughtfully packaged using recyclable or plant-based materials. A fan favorite is the Vegan Hydration Mask, a deeply nourishing treatment that leaves hair softer, glossier and more hydrated.
15. Les Secrets de Loly
One of the best French haircare brands for curly hair, Les Secrets de Loly was founded in 2009 by Kelly Massol (known as Loly) to help women and men care for their textured hair, from wavy to curly, coily, and kinky. Their award-winning Boost Curl Jelly contains a moisture-locking complex that hydrates and defines curls without leaving them stiff or crunchy. Curls stay soft, bouncy, and frizz-free. I haven’t been able to find Les Secrets de Loly as easily in the U.S., but it’s typically stocked at Monoprix and pharmacies in France. A few of my curly-haired friends here absolutely swear by it!
More French Haircare Brands
That’s not all, here are a few more exceptional French haircare brands worth mentioning.
If you deal with dandruff, Vichy Dercos is the #1 dermatologist recommended an anti-dandruff brand in Europe, developed specifically to treat flakes and an itchy, dry scalp. It also happens to be easily accessible in the U.S.! I especially love their Selenium Sulfide Anti-Dandruff Shampoo in the winter when my scalp gets drier with the change in seasons.
Ducray is another pharmacy brand in France, known for addressing dermatological concerns, especially hair loss. Similar to PHYTO and René Furterer, the line includes everything from serums and supplements to shampoos and scalp treatments. The Anaphase+ Shampoo is often recommended by dermatologists for hair loss.
France is also home to some incredible hairstylists with their own brands, although a few are a bit harder to source in the U.S. Two to watch for in France are Delphine Courteille as well as Coelho Beauty. Both founded by French hairstylists with salons in Paris.
