Paris in winter possesses a quiet charm like no other. While summer is considered peak tourism time, I love visiting the French capital in the colder months when you can really experience the city like a local. There are fewer crowds, shorter lines, plus a rich cultural calendar with exhibitions and events that let you escape the often dreary outdoors.

I've had the opportunity to visit Paris in every season, including the winter. If you've read my post on spending the holidays alone, you'll know that I even spent Christmas there one year.

The winter weather in Paris can be chilly and occasionally damp, and cold weather dressing brings its own set of challenges, especially when there are lots of bulky layers to be packed.

If you've got a winter trip to Paris on your calendar or you're considering one, this guide covers everything you need to know about what to wear in Paris in winter. From my carefully considered Paris winter packing list to style tips that help you blend in with the locals, you’ll be prepared to stay warm, travel light, and dress with Parisian panache this season.

When is Winter in Paris?

Winter in Paris starts in late December and lasts through mid-March when spring starts to arrive. The festive season kicks off in late November with Christmas markets throughout the city. After the holidays pass, Paris becomes quieter as the winter season continues into January and February.

Paris Winter Weather

Paris winters are cold, but rarely severe. Rain is fairly common, while snowfall is infrequent and usually light. When it does snow in Paris, it usually doesn’t stick around for too long.

Daytime temperatures tend to sit in the 30s and 40s. With shorter days and less daylight, evenings often feel colder as the sun sets.

As you decide what to pack for Paris this winter, be sure to check the forecast for the dates of your trip. It's also a good idea to watch the weather as your trip approaches to stay up-to-date on any changes. You’d be surprised how quickly the weather can shift.

If you tend to feel colder than expected (like I often do), it’s wise to bring options. Thermal layers are always a good idea for layering up on cold days, but you can probably leave your snow boots at home.

When March approaches, the season starts to soften. Unexpectedly warm afternoons aren’t uncommon, so you might add a few lightweight long-sleeve tees and other transitional layers to your suitcase.

What to Pack for Paris in the Winter

Winter in Paris is undeniably beautiful, but it does require a thoughtful packing strategy. Packing light can feel like a challenge, especially with the heavy outerwear, thick knitwear, and chunky footwear. It’s important to be extra thoughtful as you prepare your packing list.

Although I love embracing color in my wardrobe, I tend to prioritize neutrals when traveling. Black, brown, gray, camel and beige almost always make for stress-free styling on the go. These shades mix and match effortlessly for outfits that always feel polished and very Parisian.

The key to winter dressing in Paris lies in timeless staples and stylish layers to form your looks. A tailored black wool coat, dark skinny jeans, and black ankle boots? That’s the ultimate Parisian winter uniform.

Paris Winter Packing List

Wool Coat

A wool coat is an absolute essential for Parisian winters, especially when temperatures drop to their lowest.

A knee-length or long wool coat in neutral colors like black, navy, gray, or camel is one of the most versatile pieces you can pack. I love that you can wear it both day and night, whether shopping in the Marais or heading to a cozy dinner in Saint-Germain.

Depending on the length of your trip, you can likely pack just one coat (and let’s be honest, you probably only have room for one anyway). You’ll have plenty of styling options and save major luggage space. Below are some of my favorite wool coats for bundling up in this winter:

If your Paris getaway falls during the in-between season when the weather is generally milder, you might be able to swap the wool piece for a trench coat. It’s a French-girl staple that you’re sure to spot throughout the city.

Layering knitwear underneath is sure to keep you warm on those transitional days. Puffer coats are another smart option, although a bit less versatile. However, a thinner puffer or quilted shell can work as a layering piece under your wool coat on particularly frigid days.

Along with a reliable winter coat, I like to pack one or two jackets, whether a tailored blazer, lady jacket, or leather bomber. You can wear them solo on warmer days or under your coat for an extra layer of warmth (perfect for when you’re in and out of museums and shops). Shop some of my favorite jackets for winter in Paris below:

Knitwear

Layers are a must for surviving winter in Paris, and knitwear makes it easy to layer up in style. You’ll certainly want to include a few different options on your Paris packing list.

A wool or cashmere sweater is a winter wardrobe staple—soft, warm, and oh-so-chic. Stick with neutral shades that go well with everything. Wear one under your wool coat during the day, or pop it over a button-down shirt for extra warmth.

Turtlenecks are another Parisian favorite that is great for layering. Dress them up with a skirt and tights, or keep them casual with dark-wash denim and ankle boots. Neutral colors will make mixing and matching effortless during your travels.

Dressing for winter nights out can be a bit tricky, but I find that a chunky knit cardigan is always a win. You can wear it with a silky skirt and knee-high boots for a formal dinner or jeans and winter boots during the day. Here are some sweaters that are giving major Paris style:

Pants

Pants aren’t the most exciting item to pack, but you’ll definitely want stylish and practical options for chilly days in the city.

Tailored wool pants are a Parisian staple for winter. Wear a pair with ankle boots and a cozy knit during the day or style them for dinner with Mary Janes and a silky blouse. You can’t go wrong with classic colors like black, camel, or gray to keep your Paris winter wardrobe the most versatile.

I’m really into bootcut styles right now. They look super chic with leather ankle boots. Straight-leg and flare-leg styles are also great picks. Go with whatever suits you best!

You’ll also want to pack a couple of pairs of jeans, too. Dark-wash or black denim feels extra refined in winter and, just like pants, can be styled in many ways, whether you’re sightseeing or heading to dinner. French girls love high-waisted styles because they elongate the legs, all while being comfortable enough for walking around the city.

Winter Boots

Leather boots are the perfect mix of chic and practical for winter in Paris. I highly recommend packing a pair of ankle boots with a low heel that you can wear with jeans and pants for everyday wear. Black and brown are classic colors that work well with almost anything.

Tall leather boots are also worth packing if you have room in your suitcase. A heeled pair is my favorite for a night out in the city, but if comfort is your priority, a flat boot is excellent for walking around during the day.

If there’s some snow in the forecast, be sure to have a waterproof boot along. It doesn’t need to be heavy-duty either. There are plenty of sleek, stylish options to keep your feet dry while you navigate the rainy or snowy Paris streets. Here are some Paris-proof boot options to consider:

Sneakers

Every woman absolutely needs a pair of sneakers for a trip to Paris. No matter the season, you can’t travel without reliable walking shoes. You’ll spot Parisians all over the city wearing the French brand Veja and sleek styles from Adidas.

No frumpy gym shoes, though! If you want to blend in with the locals, a classic white leather shoe is the way to go. I’ve had my Veja Campo sneakers for a few years now, and they’re my favorite.

For winter, look for leather styles that offer a bit more protection from the elements than canvas options. Consider packing a pair with cushioned soles, especially if you plan on lots of walking (which you definitely will!).

You can even dress your sneakers up. Parisian women love pairing sneakers with tailored pieces like wool coats, blazers, and even dresses for that effortlessly chic look.

Winter Accessories

Once you’ve decided on the key pieces in your Parisian winter wardrobe, it’s time to consider accessories. Thankfully, they don’t take up too much space.

A wool beanie is a must-have for cold days in Paris. And while berets might seem like a bit of a French cliché, they’re also a stylish option. I’ve spotted more and more French women wearing berets. Styled with preppier outfits, I think a beret can be super chic!

Gloves are another winter accessory to add to your suitcase. Wool or leather gloves are stylish options that ensure your hands stay warm during your Parisian adventures.

You’ll see scarves everywhere in Paris, even on more mild days. The French love to bundle up, and in the winter, it becomes essential. You’ll definitely want to pack a wool or cashmere one to throw around your neck before heading out.

Thermal Layers

Thermal layers are also a smart option to have at the ready. I recommend a few thermal tops and some tights for layering during the winter months. I get all of my thermal basics from Uniqlo!

Don’t forget about wool or cashmere socks to keep your feet toasty.

If you need to stock up on winter accessories once you’re in Paris, I recommend checking out Uniqlo for affordable hats, gloves, scarves, thermal layers, and more.

For socks and tights specifically, you should definitely pass by Calzedonia—they have some stylish options that are also budget-friendly. And when in doubt, head to your closest Monoprix (the French Target), where you can find almost anything you might need.

Evenings Out

Nights out in Paris call for more elevated dressing, whether you’re indulging in fine dining or enjoying a show at the Opéra Garnier. Dressing for a winter evening can be tricky, but with a little thought, you'll be ready to impress.

A midi dress is an easy choice for a night out. Just add some tights and leather boots, and voilà!

Mixing and matching is another great option. Pair a silky blouse with tailored wool pants and ankle boots for a smart look that easily transitions from day to night. An elegant sweater with a midi skirt and simple heels also looks incredibly chic.

I also see many younger women wearing the Intimissimi cashmere boat neck tops on evenings out. They are sheer, but also surprisingly warm. They look extra seductive with a lacy balconette bra underneath.

High heels aren’t the best for Paris’s cobblestone streets, and you aren’t likely going to see many locals wearing them either. If you plan on taking a taxi or Uber to dinner, you can bring them along, but a block heel or leather boot is more practical.

Travel Essentials

There are a few year-round essentials you’ll want to include in your packing list. A travel umbrella is an essential for me, no matter where I go, and it’s especially useful during Parisian winters. With occasional showers and even the rare snowfall, you definitely want to have one on hand.

Cold air and indoor heating can be harsh on the skin, so hydrating skincare is just as important as warm layers. Pack a rich moisturizer and a lip balm to combat dryness while walking the city. Check out my French winter skincare routine for more seasonal tips and product recommendations.

And if you forget? Consider it the perfect excuse to step into a French pharmacy once you arrive (one of my favorite Paris rituals). You can even use my French pharmacy discount while you’re there.

Even in winter, the sun can peek through the clouds. It’s a good idea to pack sunglasses and some sunscreen to protect your skin.

A reusable water bottle is another underrated essential. You won’t see many French people lugging around massive water bottles, but as a traveler, it’s a must for staying hydrated.

Finally, think carefully about bags. A sleek crossbody is a no-brainer for both daytime exploring and evening outings. On longer days, I often opt for a roomy tote that can hold all my essentials, including a compact umbrella and water bottle, paired with a smaller evening bag for dinners or nights out.

Don’t forget to plan your travel outfit too! Layers are a must when traveling in winter. You’ll want to be ready for the temperature changes from the plane to the city. On the flight, I always wear my wool coat and sneakers (both likely on your packing list) to save space in my suitcase.

I hope this guide helps you decide what to wear in Paris this winter. With a few key pieces and some planning, you’ll be ready to explore the City of Light looking stylish and staying warm!
